BAPTISM Principles and Practices Study Series 7

To teach the meaning and importance of baptism. BAPTISM: Principles and Practices We recommend this study for those who have done the repentance study and show willingness to repent. For a religious nation like the Philippines, we should avoid making baptism the issue because it is not. The central study is actually the repentance study, and baptism should be seen only as part of a person’s response to the gospel. For religious people, we also suggest making a timeline of the religious events in their life. This will aid in explaining the point or moment when a person is saved. For other issues, use toolbox studies. PURPOSE NOTE:

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices Acts: Shows conversions happening in the present. Epistles: Look backward at Christian conversion. For this study we will focus on baptism as essential to a NT conversion. Definition: Gk ‘baptisma’ primarily means dipping or immersion, from the verb ‘baptidzo’. Introduction: Different parts of the Bible have different time perspectives about conversion. OT: Has foreshadows of conversion (faith, repentance, &baptism). Gospels: Look forward to conversion. * John the Baptist’s ministry showed baptism as a response to the message. Jesus points to his death as the central theme for salvation.

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices Acts 2: "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.“ 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?“ 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call." 38 Sinabi ni Pedro sa kanila: Magsisi kayo at magpabawtismo sa pangalan ni Jesucristo patungkol sa pagpapatawad ng inyong mga kasalanan. At tatanggapin ninyo ang kaloob na Banal na Espiritu. 39 Ito ay sapagkat ang pangakong ito ay para sa inyo at sa inyong mga anak at sa lahat ng nasa malayo gaano man karami ang tawagin ng ating Panginoon Diyos. BAPTISM: Principles and Practices Acts 2:36-39 First “Christian sermon” at Pentecost to a non-Christian audience. What was Peter’s directive to them? Repentance Baptism Forgiveness of sin and Gift of the Spirit Forgiveness of sin and Gift of the Spirit Remember, the two resultant key elements are the forgiveness of sins and the gift (or indwelling) of the Holy Spirit.

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices Ephesians 4:4-6 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. TAGALOG

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices Ephesians 4:4-6 This passage defines the basic areas of doctrine – baptism is one of them. Christian baptism is essential and there is only one. One Body One God And Father of All One Spirit One Hope One Lord One Baptism One Faith

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices Romans 6:3-4 3 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices 1 Peter 3:21 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God.

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices 1 Peter 3:21 Paul looks back at conversion. He states that floodwater symbolizes baptism (not vice versa!) Baptism is an appeal (RSV, more literal translation of the Greek) towards God.

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices Colossians 2:12 12 having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead Kayo ay inilibing na kasama niya sa pamamagitan ng bawtismo. Faith is essential in baptism (being ‘buried’ and ‘raised’ with Christ.

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices Acts 2:46; 8:39; 16:34 2:46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 8:39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 16:34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole family. How did the first century converts feel after being baptized? Can you name some reason why you might feel the same?

BAPTISM: Principles and Practices OPTIONAL VERSES To Show That: Belief and baptism go hand in hand; Mk 16:16 Repentance before baptism is essential; Lk 3:7-9 Baptism is immersion “into” water and is part of the good news; Ac 8:26-38 We need to be urgent for baptism; Ac 22:16 Hearing and accepting the word leads to baptism; Ac 16:31-33 Being born again involves water and spirit, John 3:1-5 Obedience is at times needed to gain the blessing; an apparent OT foreshadow of baptism; 2 Ki 5:1-14
