BBSRC PIPS – Professional Internships for PhD Students  The BBSRC will be introducing a compulsory internships for all PhD students  Broad Guidelines  3 months with the 4 years  Work unrelated to the research  Wide range of opportunities

Newcastle Medical Sciences Internship Schemes Intern Scholarship Scheme  Up to three months following thesis submission  Available for all PhD students to apply  Students must source and arrange their own internship  Applications made to the Graduate School and awarded competitively

Funding  Scholarships will provide up to 3 months stipend  Stipends awarded up to £1000 per month with no additional costs  Applications with partial funding from the organisation or the intern with be viewed favourably

Competitive Application Process  Does the organisation agree to take the intern?  Which skills does the intern hope to develop?  Will the internship improve student employment prospects  Is the organisation prepared to part fund the intern

Who with? Interns may work in any area other than a continuation of their research e.g.  Companies e.g. Demuris, Cancer Research Technologies, Leica Microsystems  Policy makers e.g. Newcastle Council or Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust  Educators e.g. Local Schools, FE Colleges, Centre for Life, Libraries or Museums  Charities or Not for Profit organisations e.g. Arthritis UK or Cancer Research UK, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in Brussels

Arrangements  The Graduate School may be able to provide contacts and would advise students to seeks advice first  All arrangements: timing, visas, contracts, intellectual property etc. must be arranged by the student and the organisation.

When to apply  Applications can be made at any point following completion of the first year assessment  Making early applications is advised  Scholarships will only be awarded on submission of a thesis

Enterprise Scholarships  This Intern Scholarship scheme has been based on the successful Enterprise Scholarship Scheme  Enterprise Scholarships can are still available and can be applied for at 
