PURPOSE OF PEER REVIEW OF TEACHING?

PURPOSE OF PEER REVIEW OF TEACHING Helping staff to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of their own teaching To enhance the student experience of learning To facilitate and value the learning experience of discussing teaching Recognition of the importance of sharing good practice School teaching review plans Management information on overall quality of teaching, Staff Development (SD) needs and learning resources

PRINCIPLES OF THE UH SYSTEM Confidential - nothing reported other than an option to provide example(s) of effective practice on PRF3 Reviewer must not be the line manager and must have undertaken SD for peer review of teaching Each full time member of academic staff reviewed at least once a year All teaching staff will be trained and therefore able to review

SCHOOL PLANS Adopting a theme - Schools may choose to adopt a theme each year to focus reviews (e.g. assessment and feedback) Scope of review – Schools may wish Peer Review to explore an alternative to classroom activity (e.g. StudyNet sites, podcasts, distance learning materials etc) Reviewer background – Schools may choose to collaborate and have inter-School reviews.

THE REVIEW Will normally last for up to one hour depending on activity If reviewing a teaching session, reviewer should be unobtrusive and not participate in the session Reviewer makes notes during the session against the criteria as given on Sides Two and Three of PRF1

FEEDBACK ON REVIEW

Start by asking the person reviewed to evaluate the session Mention positive features Move on to things which ‘could be worked on/improved’ Important to give constructive, critical feedback Person being reviewed to complete PRF2 for own reflection
