Project day at Taivalkoski upper secondary school October 2010

Students are working in small groups and planning their presentations.

When the mini projects were ready, they were performed to the other students.

Climate and lifestyle We have four seasons in Finland The climate of the seasons affect the lifestyle

Spring March, April, May Snow melts so there can be very wet outside The sun shines every day more and more  the length of daylight increases In spring people celebrate the May Day and Easter Birds come back from the south and the nature wakes up again Spring is full of love…… ;)

-People spend a lot of time outside in spring -You can ski on crust of snow, do downhill skiing ( if skiing center is still open ) and, the most important, enjoy the sun -We are waiting for summer and the long summer holiday, too ( schools end at the beginning of June )

Summer June, July, August Students don’t have school and usually they go to work It’s warm, but not hot (20-25 degrees) Around the Midsummer there’s a lot of light and the sun doesn’t set Hobbies: swimming, fishing, cycling, taking the sun, relaxing, hiking, travelling, barbeque, disc golf etc. Housework: agriculture and picking strawberries When it’s the Midsummer Day, we go to summer cottages with our family or friends, make bonfires, go to saunas, which are near lakes, barbecue and enjoy the magic of Midsummer

Autumn September, October, November The most variable season in Finland. During this season both our nature and we people prepare for the hard winter-time During the autumn it gets colder and darker. An umbrella will be your best friend on the way to school or work. Some morning you may realize to have problems with your balance because of icy streets. The first snow comes in October but usually it won’t last because the temperature changes below and above 0° C. Migratory birds leave Finland for the wintertime and some animals like bears prepare for hibernation. It means that they sleep over the winter Due to the darkness, we don’t get enough “sunshine vitamin” so some people suffer from autumn depression. We also spend our time more and more inside when the weather is bad

In the nature the most noticeable signal of autumn is a beautiful spectrum of colors in leafy trees. Before dropping off, the leaves have a colorful mix of green, yellow, red, orange and brown. People admire it and they like to go out and hike in the nature. At the beginning of autumn berries and mushrooms are getting ripe to be picked. Berry and mushroom picking even employs some people for a couple of months and children often earn their first pocket money for picking some liters blueberries. During the autumn there are hunting periods. If you have a hunting license you can hunt for example wild ducks, hare or moose. Unfortunately schools and universities begin in the mid-August so we can’t enjoy the beautiful autumn nature all day long.

Winter December, January, February, March Very cold (sometimes more than 30 minusdegrees!) In Finland we usually have more than one meter snow! In spite of freeze and snow we live a normal life also in winter Lots of snow and very thick ice which make skating, downhill and crosscountry skiing, snowboarding, ski jumping, snowmobile driving and ice fishing possible Finland’s Independence Day and Christmas are in December Winter is turist season in Finland, then we get a lot of guests from Middle Europe for example because they will see snow and Santa Claus who lives in Finland with reindeer! Welcome to visit in wintry Finland!

In winter you can see the Northern lights We don’t have sunlight almost at all during the polar night People have to eat vitamin D because the sun isn’t shining enough

If the climate changes too much…

This is what Finland would be like

You can affect by stopping the global warming!!!
