Motivation in the Workplace

A major resource of companies is their “human capital” ~ the cost of low employee motivation can be great

In order to be effective in an organizational context, you must know how to diagnose and remediate motivation problems ~ yours as well as others

Basic Assumptions About People People have a fundamental need to do well People want control at work People do not want to be held accountable for things they cannot control People want feedback, but do not like to be “evaluated” People want to be valued

Motivation is individualistic - every person will be motivated in a unique kind of way Motivation is a process – a series of interconnected steps Motivation can be complex, but it is logical Motivation is manageable Motivation is not exploiting others Characteristics of Motivation

Motivation has 3 components 1)Direction – what task I choose to work on 1)Effort – how hard I work on the task 1)Persistence – how long I will work on the task
