SCANNING BASICS From a Windows Perspective OFFERED BY INSTRUCTIONAL COMPUTING UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI – ST.LOUIS

Scanning Stations The following tutorial will assist you in learning how to scan images and documents. Images may be Photos, Graphics, Line-drawings or even Documents. Documents may be scanned with a text recognition program giving a fast and easy way to turn paper documents into digital files you can edit. Scanners are located in the following computer labs… Social Science Building Room 103 (SSB103) Thomas Jefferson Library Commons (TJ 316) Benton Hall Computer Lab (BH232) Ward E. Barnes Library (WEB100) Music 105 FA 220

Understanding Copyright Laws You are responsible for following all applicable federal laws in regard to scanning copyrighted material, including, but not limited to, textbooks, magazines, and journal articles. For more information, please visit: /reserves/acsrescopyright.htm /reserves/acsrescopyright.htm

Scanning pictures using VueScan Place the picture on the scanner and close the cover. Open VueScan by double-clicking the icon located on the computer’s desktop.

Scanning pictures using VueScan By default, VueScan will be setup to scan a color photo to a JPEG file. On the input tab, users can change the quality, scan & preview resolution, and the type of media being scanned.

Scanning pictures using VueScan If a user is wanting to scan an image, you can press the preview button in VueScan to crop the image, rotate the image or to see how the image will look at a certain setting. The preview button will not save the image to a file. Users must press the scan button in VueScan to scan the file; after the scan completes users will have Windows Photo View open with the scanned image.

Scanning Images using VueScan and Multipage PDF First we need to go to the output tab in Vuescan.

Next, uncheck the JPEG option and checkmark the PDF option. After checking the PDF option, another option called Multi-page PDF will appear. Checkmark that option.

Scan as you normally would by pressing the scan button in VueScan. After scanning the first page, insert the next page into the scanner and click scan. Keep doing this until you have scanned all your pages. Once you scan all the pages, click Last Page and the PDF will open in Adobe Reader.

Scanning pictures using Photoshop To open Photoshop on campus, go to Start->All Programs -> Multimedia->Adobe Photoshop CS

Scanning pictures using Photoshop To scan a document into Photoshop when using a campus computer, go to File->Import->CanoScan LiDE 90. You will be presented with a similar window the right. Press the scan button to scan the image.

After it scans, you will be prompted with the dialog box below. If you select the Retouch and save the image, it will open in Photoshop and allow it to be edited.

Scanning Text with OCR OCR stands for optical character recognition The software we have on campus that is able to do OCR is Omnipage SE.

Scanning Text with OCR For quick scan, click on If you wish to have more control over the process, switch the program from it’s default automatic settings to the manual controls by clicking on OCR Wizard.

Scanning Text with OCR If potential errors are detected in the document, the OCR Proofreader window will appear. You can ignore or correct the error by simply typing in ‘Suspect word’ field. When all errors have been addressed the completion window will be displayed. Click OK to continue.

Scanning Text with OCR After the proofread is done, the Save As window will appear. Choose the destination for your file. Type in your file name. Chose your file type. For example, Microsoft Word 2000, XP (*.doc).

Scanning Text with OCR multiple pages After you scan your first page, click the1-2-3 button again and you will get a new dialog box shown below. Click add more pages. After it scans and does error checking, it will prompt you to save again. You can click cancel and go to your next page if you need to scan more, or if you are done then save the file.
