Behaviour Management

Why? Is the work set at the right level? Are they lacking in confidence? Are they afraid of failure? Are they attention seeking? Do they have a troubled home life? Do they find it difficult to concentrate? Do they lack motivation?

Some Tips... Use incentives and rewards – Positive attention – Playing a game – Recognition from their parent/ sibling Sanctions – difficult in Jacari setting – Only make threats you can carry out e.g. Telling parents

Top Tips... Be consistent – Always be pleased to see them – Make sure you always carry out threats/ rewards – Routines give security Tell them what will happen in the lesson – Visual Timetable – Time frame

Top Tips... Ignore them – ask them to say when they’re ready Change the subject – distraction “Don’t think of purple pineapples” Listen to your tone of voice – Make sure you always sound calm – Use a different tone of voice for different situations

Confidence Give specific praise – Specific sticker/ star charts Expect them to succeed Encourage – Don’t always correct every single mistake – Give more positive feedback than negative Admit you’re fallible – e.g. if too difficult work set

Rules Make only a few (max 5) Make them together Phrase them positively e.g. “In your Jacari lessons we always...” Remind them at the beginning of each lesson Get the child to take responsibility Behaviour is a choice – “If you choose to... then...” Keep them visual e.g. Traffic lights system

Motivation Make it as fun and interesting as possible Show the progress made – Make goals – Reward personal best – Try making a graph or chart Give recognition for trying Make rewards tangible e.g. Certificate, sticker Show how it’s relevant - Link to the future, what job they would like to do Be enthusiastic yourself
