How to Cite a Journal Article Steve Poppino CSI Library 9/20/2011

This is how a journal article citation looks when you copy it from Academic Search Premier. It needs some work.

In APA style, start with the author: Last name first, followed by initials.

Next comes the date of the issue of the journal. For a research journal, with continuous paging through all issues, the year is enough.

Next comes the title of the article. Notice that only the words at the beginning of the title and subtitle, and proper names, get a capital letter.

Next comes the title of the journal. All the main words are capitalized, and in italics.

Now type the volume number and issue number for the journal, followed by the page numbers of the article. after Elvis Presley’s tour. Journal of Popular Culture, 39 (1),

The last bit of the citation is the DOI (Digital Object Identifier). This is a long number that identifies the publisher. Copy and paste this from the database; don’t try to type it. If you don’t see a DOI, go to to double check.
