Cataloging Challenges Chinese Electronic Resources Vendor-provided Metadata In General Inaccurate Inconsistent Incomprehensive Incorrect form of Chinese scripts Specific Issues with E-journals Different enumeration system from the original version Hidden title changes Outdated holdings information Irregular and non-automated content update alerts E-books Specific Issues Title Publication Date 7

Cataloging Challenges Chinese Electronic Resources Vendor-provided Metadata Examples Title on the piece Title on Website Date in the MARC record Date on the piece 8

Cataloging Challenges Chinese Electronic Resources Content Missing Content Covered Information Blurry images OCR Mistranslation 9

Cataloging Challenges Chinese Electronic Resources Manual Manipulations for OCLC Records Hybrid Records Parallel Records Records with Discrepancy between Traditional and Simplified Scripts 书法篆刻术语辞典 (simplified form provided by vendor) 書法篆刻術語辭典 (traditional form in OCLC# ) 書法篆刻術語辞典 (mixed form that appears on the title page) Duplicate Online Version Records HathiTrust, Google projects, records from batch loads 10

Other Cataloging Challenges. Lack of Word Division Standard for Pinyin Chinese Scripts not Searchable in Some Tools Knowledge Base and Link Resolution: Developers are inexperienced in managing Chinese language packages Not All Resources with Title-level Links No IP Authentication for Some Title-level Links Weak relationship among organizations in the e- resources supply chain 11

How can you help? Forward cataloging mistakes to SCP Incorporate clear requirements into licensing agreements Upgrade print and online records in OCLC Urge OCLC to resume communication with CALIS Build international standards including Romanization word division standard And most importantly, Collaborate with organizations in the entire electronic resources supply chain 12
