Design Review Team Digital Burnout Senior Design Spring 2011 Analog Gauge w/ Digital Display 1

Review Outline Project Goal Functional Overview Functional Breakdown Specifications Display Concepts – Description/Picture – Pros vs. Cons Future Plans Webpage/Schedule 2

Project Goal To design an aftermarket speedometer featuring an illuminated digital realization of the existing analog gauge movement, for use in Harley Davidson motorcycles. The gauge will have “plug and play” functionality and be easily visible in all lighting conditions. 3

Functional Overview Various bike processes Gauge Processor/Controller LED’s/LCDBike Rider Electrical Signals Digital Output Light Functional Control 4

Functional Breakdown Broken down into four parts: Gauge Input Gauge Output Projected Hardware (Electrical) Projected Hardware (Non-Electrical) 5

Gauge Input 6

Gauge Output 7

Projected Hardware (Electrical) 8

Projected Hardware (Non-Electrical) 9

Specifications General RequirementsSpecific RequirementsAcceptable Performance Read/Understand LED’s visible in any light Must see light Non-offensive to eyes Not blinding at night, visible during day Easy to read at a glance ± 2 mph Accuracy Smooth LightingCan’t see individual LED’s UseableEasy to install< 30 min Plug and playWorks out of the box Ease of transferring tripsPush button to change for different trips DurabilityWeather proofWeather does not effect use of gauge functions Lifetime warrantyWork for the rest of customers life 10

Display Concept Discrete LEDs Numbers being lit up by LEDs. Central LCD Display for odometer, trip meter and error messages 11 Multiple Design Options in one Figure

Pros vs. Cons Discrete LEDs Pros: Usage of space (Small SMTs) Quick visible representation of speed Customizable Cons: Accuracy is limited 12

Display Concept Arc LEDs LEDs arranged in a rainbow or arc format. Central LCD Display 13

Pros vs. Cons Arc LEDs Pros: Usage of space (Small SMTs) Accurate representation of speed (±2 mph) Unique Style Quick visible representation of speed Cons: Requires many LED’s. SMT’s may not be bright enough 14

Display Concept Digital Needle LEDs arranged in a string or line format. LCD Display can be in the direct center or bottom half of display 15

Pros vs. Cons Digital Needle Pros: Customer is used to seeing a needle from an analog gauge Ease of transition to buying a new product Cons: Not very accurate Not stylish; choppy 16

Future Plans Snapshot Day Testing – Acrylic cut-outs to observe dispersion of light – Trying smaller surface mount LED’s – Sunlight, Brightness, and Power Consumption testing Evaluate Design effectiveness Implement Designs Research physical components to use Acquire necessary components Performance Tests Prototype by end of semester/Expo 17
