Green Building

TOPICS Introduction to GREEN BUILDING Importance of GREEN BUILDING Materials used in GREEN BUILDING Merits & Demerits Green building concept in INDIA

“Green building technology should reach all” Definition :- "It is the practice of increasing efficiency with which buildings use resources-energy,water and materials-while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment “Green building technology should reach all”

Concept The ‘Green building’ concept is gaining importance in various countries , including India. These are buildings that ensure that waste is minimizes at every stage during the construction and operation of the building , resulting in low costs , according to experts in the technology .The techniques associated with the ‘Green building’ include measures to prevent erosion of soil , rainwater harvesting , use of solar energy , preparation of landscapes to reduce in usage of water , recycling of waste and use of world class energy efficient practices. A similar concept is NATURAL BUILDING , which is usually on a smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally.

How To Make Green Building? A green building is a structure that is environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout its life-cycle . These objectives expand and complement the classical building design , concerns of economy , utility , durability and comfort.

IMPORTANCE OF GREEN BUILDING Nowadays, we should make a way to maximize our natural resources to help our mother earth to get relief from the pollutions like global warming that we all are experiencing . Non renewable resources are expensive and unsafe . Through this green building technology we can save a lot of energy. Green building are practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle: from siting to design , construction , operation , maintenance , renovation and deconstruction.

Source of materials Renewable sources : Forests Reuse from waste : old plumbing , doors etc…..

Wool brick Obtained by adding wool and a natural polymer found in seaweed to the clay of brick 37% more strength than burnt bricks Resistant for cold and wet climate

Sustainable concrete Crushed glass Wood chips or slag – a byproduct of steel manufacturing. Reduces the emission of CO2.

Solar Tiles Exist to simply protect a building. They spend a large portion of the day absorbing energy from the sun.

Paper Insulation Made from recycled newspapers and cardboard. Then filled with chemical foam. Insect resistant & fire retardant.

Triple –Glazed Window Super-efficient windows. Stops heat to enter the building & from direct sunlight.

Eco Friendly Use Bamboo replacing the steel bars.

Merits & Demerits of GREEN BUILDING Healthier lifestyle and recreation Efficient Technologies. Easier Maintenance. Return on Investment. Improved indoor air quality. Energy efficiency. Water efficiency. Water reduction Temperature moderation Water conservation Economical construction for poor. DEMERITS Initial cost is high Availability of materials Need more time to construct Need skill worker.

INTELLiGENT BUILDING

CONTENTS Defining Intelligent building. Components of an intelligent building. Intelligent building at work. Intelligent building at home.

Defining intelligent building A building that integrates technology and process to create a facility that is safer, more comfortable and productive for its occupants, and more operationally efficient for its owners. Advanced technology—combined with improved processes for design, construction and operations—provide a superior indoor environment that improves occupant comfort and productivity while reducing energy consumption and operations staffing.

conti….. Building management: Building automation and the physical environment. Space management: Building’s internal space and operating cost , Capabilities and flexibilities to accommodate changes , personal moves and connectivity Business management: Management of the organization’s core business.

Defining Intelligent Building Major IB features Automatic reactions (adjust internal conditions) Effective communication & IT management Responsiveness to changes Integrated pyramid Single function/dedicated systems Multifunctional systems Integrated systems Computer integrated building

Components of an IB Integration of various building systems Energy management system Lighting management system Security systems & fire safety Telecommunications & office automation Local area networks (LANs) Cabling management Intelligent maintenance mgt. system (IMMS) Computer aided facility management (CAFM)

Components of an IB Four main aspects: Facility management Take care & maintain various functions for occupant comfort & operation Information management Office automation (OA), LAN, wiring Communication Tel/Fax, e-mail, video telecommunication Control DDC, building automation system

Components of an IB Major categories: Energy efficiency Energy management and control Lifesafety systems Fire alarm and security Telecommunications systems PABX telephone, videotext, cablevision, e-mail Workplace automation Data processing, word processing, CAD, information services

IB @ Work Current and future development New ways of working More interaction More collaboration (physically or electronically) More individual autonomy New patterns of space use More group spaces More shared spaces More space for concentration More intermittent space use

IB @ Home Future home Home networking Internet appliances Webcam, web phones e-books, video walls Home office Virtual clinic/hospital ……
