Submission doc.: IEEE 11-15/0550r0 May 2015 K. Yunoki and B. Zhao, KDDI R&D Labs.Slide 2 Abstract The inclusion of the legacy preamble (L-STF, L-LTF and L-SIG) in HE PPDU were agreed at the January 2015 meeting. However, the legacy preamble part of PPDU for UL- OFDMA sent by multiple STAs will occupy the same band (e.g. 20MHzBW) at the same timing. This submission analyzes feasibility of this overlapped L-Preamble, especially about L-STF, in the same band at the same timing.

Zhao, KDDI R&D Labs.Slide 3 Overlap of L-Preamble (UL-OFDMA) Data2 Data1 TX from STA1 TX from STA2 RX on the AP side Overlap of preamble will happen. UL-Data (STA1) UL-Data (STA2) This will also happen in the case of ACK/BA transmission for MU DL-OFDMA if sub-channel based ACK is adopted. … UL-Data (STA-n) ~ UL-Data (STA1)

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-15/0550r0 Slide 4K. Yunoki and B. Zhao, KDDI R&D Labs. May 2015 Time Difference of Arrival (Overlapping L-STF) Copied from IEEE std t1t1 t2t2 t3t3 t4t4 t5t5 t6t6 t7t7 t8t8 t9t9 t 10 8us From STA1 t1t1 t 10 From STA2 From STA3 t1t1 t 10 t2.... t3 It’s obvious to have some time differences of arrival among transmitted frames. + What will the mixed L-STF be?

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-15/0550r0 Effect of Arrival Time Difference Slide 5K. Yunoki and B. Zhao, KDDI R&D Labs. May 2015 t1t1 t2t2 t3t3 t4t4 t5t5 t6t6 t7t7 t8t8 t9t9 t 10 From STA1 T/2 = 0.1ns From STA2 t2=0.1ns  It’s almost impossible for each STA to adjust signal arrival timing on the AP side for matching their phases among their signals for UL-OFDMA. (f = 5.0GHz) There is a phase shift of 180 degrees between STA1’s and STA2’s L-STF only when the arrival time difference is 0.1 ns.

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-15/0550r0 What will the mixed L-STF be? May 2015 K. Yunoki and B. Zhao, KDDI R&D Labs.Slide 6 I Q STA1 STA2 When there is a phase shift of 180 degrees between STA1’s and STA2’s L-STF, signal constellation may appear as the left figure. How can the AP synchronize with this mixed signal? It’s not feasible for AP to obtain synchronization from the overlapped L-STFs sent by MU STAs for UL-OFDMA. e.g. Signal constellation

Submission doc.: IEEE 11-15/0550r0 Possible Solutions Header part of PPDUs for UL-OFDMA should not be overlapped in frequency domain. Possible solutions are: Slide 7K. Yunoki and B. Submission doc.: IEEE 11-15/0550r0May 2015 K. Yunoki and B. Zhao, KDDI R&D Labs.Slide 11 Summary It’s not feasible to use 20MHzBW L-preamble for UL-OFDMA transmission.  It is required to define header in narrower bandwidth to avoid overlap in the frequency domain for MU UL- OFDMA PPDU reception on the AP side. Further discussions are necessary to reach a TG consensus about requirements for narrowed header.
