AGENDA: Grammar: Infinitive Phrase Activity 2. Trans Poetry 3. Transcendental music LAST CLASS: Gallery Walk NEXT CLASS: Personal Credos HOMEWORK: Find a “Transcendental” song, highlight it with explanations, and one pager. OUR LEARNING FOCUS FOR TODAY: Develop a working definition of Transcendentalism and its key tenets Analyze foundational works of American literature to identify philosophical tenets Explain how Transcendentalists envisioned the pursuit of happiness

Before Reading” ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do the following three pieces relate to the core tenets of Transcendentalism? A genre is a style of literature or art with specific characteristics, features, and format. These generalizable characteristics are called genre conventions. What conventions characterize poetry as a broad literary genre? In your table groups, come up with a list of 10 characteristics, features, and conventions specific to the genre of POETRY. You have 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, share out the lists as a whole class, coming up with a combined list of poetry genre conventions. Write these on the board.

During Reading” ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do the following three pieces relate to the core tenets of Transcendentalism? As a class, we will read aloud each poem. Follow along and mark the text for ideas that connect to Transcendentalist thinking and the core tenets, or key beliefs, of Transcendentalism. As a whole class, we will discuss the connections between each poem and the ideas of Transcendentalism to examine the modern relevance of a literary era after each reading. Review the general conventions of poetry, focusing on how each author uses them.

“In the Depths of Solitude” “A Light Exists in Spring” After REAding” ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do the following three pieces relate to the core tenets of Transcendentalism? HOMEWORK” Find a song with lyrics that capture your own beliefs about the pursuit of happiness. Your song must link to at least one of the Transcendental ideals you’ve identified in this unit. Print out or write out the song lyrics, highlighting the lines which you believe correspond to the core tenets of Transcendentalism and write a short explanation in the margins next to each highlight (minimum of 10 lines highlighted, no repeats). Write a one pager explaining why you think this song is a good representation of Transcendental belief(s).
