Major Issues of Vegetable availability in Rainy Season A) General As high temperature reduces life span of summer crops, the availability of summer vegetables ends in the month of May. Water is the major constraint for growing vegetables on large scale in summer season. Availability of rainy season Vegetables starts from August. Availability of good quality seeds & seedlings. Increasing disease & pest incidences in rainy season. Leafy vegetables are affected by heavy rains. Shortage in vegetables supply in the month of June & July. Rs. In Lakhs

B) Vegetable growers C) Consumers 1 . Lack of market information. 2 . Fluctuation in market rates. Losses due to perishable nature of produce. Large number of middlemen in market. Lack of logistic & PHM support. C) Consumers Rs. In Lakhs 1 . Assured availability of safe & quality vegetables at affordable prices .

Strategies To prolong summer vegetable plantation. Early plantation of rainy season vegetables. Promotion of Vegetable seedlings under protected cultivation (shade nets, poly houses etc.) 4. Off season plantation of vegetables under protected cultivation (shade nets & poly houses) to enhance vegetable production. Initiative for vegetable production through VIUC (Vegetables Initiative for Urban Cluster) Project. Rs. In Lakhs

Strategies 6. Location specific and need based cultivation of Onion Tomato, Chili etc. to meet out demand supply gap. Establishment of end to end value chain to ensure fresh and timely supply vegetables. Direct Marketing of vegetables i.e. growers to consumers. Promotion of FPOs to ensure Backward and forward linkages. Promotion of PPP-IAD models. Rs. In Lakhs

Onion Set Plantation Recommendations :- The Technique developed by MPKV, Rahuri for set plantation will add to the availability of onion by early maturity. Recommendations :- A set plantation technique of onion is recommended for achieving early maturity, higher bulb production and profitability of pre kharif onion. For set preparation sowing of onion seeds (20 g/ 6m2) should be done in second fortnight of January and sets be harvested after 90 days from sowing for getting 1.0 to 2.5 diameter set size. The transplanting of stored sets should be done from second fortnight of June for better quality onion production within 70 to 75 days after transplanting . Rs. In Lakhs
