Definitions… Democracy: a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting. Constituency: the area that your elected MP represents. There are 650 constituencies in the UK (and, as a result, 650 MPs). Coalition: when two or more parties join together to make a government (when no party has a majority of the seats in the House of Commons). Manifesto: a list of a party's ideas and policies, outlining what it will do if it wins the election.

This is the biggest election in the UK and experts think it'll be one of the closest contests in decades. The general election is about picking a new government and must happen at least once every five years. Politicians who work in the Houses of Parliament, regularly debate on big issues that affect how the country is run, including how much money hospitals get and what you learn in school. On 30 March, David Cameron did what every prime minister has done ahead of calling a general election: go to see the Queen. After his trip to Buckingham Palace, he returned to Downing Street to formally announce the election, which will take place on 7 May. Each registered voter gets one ballot paper. They mark it with a cross next to the name of their chosen candidate. The candidate who gets more votes than any other becomes an MP. This is called first past the post. The magic number of MPs needed to win the election is 326, which is half of all of them plus one. So far it looks unlikely any party will reach that total this time around.
