“Opportunities don’t happen. You create them.” Chris Grosser

You are about to see a photograph from last week’s news. Your task is to try and work out what the event is and what news story it is. You have just 1 minute.

Can you think of three words to describe the event or picture? Your next task is to now try and describe what has happened in the news that relates to the picture. Can you think of three words to describe the event or picture? Be prepared - you will be asked to explain why you have chosen those words. You have 2 minutes to think of your words.

Democracy Coalition Constituency Manifesto

Can you work out what the words mean from these sentences? Holding free and fair elections is the most important ingredient in making any country a democracy. Every eligible resident gets to cast one vote for a candidate in their local constituency. In the last election, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats joined to create a coalition government. The Green Party has outlined a number of equality measures in its manifesto – including pension equality for gay couples and stronger legislation against hate crime. The c

Definitions… Democracy: a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting. Constituency: the area that your elected MP represents. There are 650 constituencies in the UK (and, as a result, 650 MPs). Coalition: when two or more parties join together to make a government (when no party has a majority of the seats in the House of Commons). Manifesto: a list of a party's ideas and policies, outlining what it will do if it wins the election.

What is the event that is happening in the news?

This is the biggest election in the UK and experts think it'll be one of the closest contests in decades. The general election is about picking a new government and must happen at least once every five years. Politicians who work in the Houses of Parliament, regularly debate on big issues that affect how the country is run, including how much money hospitals get and what you learn in school. On 30 March, David Cameron did what every prime minister has done ahead of calling a general election: go to see the Queen. After his trip to Buckingham Palace, he returned to Downing Street to formally announce the election, which will take place on 7 May. Each registered voter gets one ballot paper. They mark it with a cross next to the name of their chosen candidate. The candidate who gets more votes than any other becomes an MP. This is called first past the post. The magic number of MPs needed to win the election is 326, which is half of all of them plus one. So far it looks unlikely any party will reach that total this time around.

Apply knowledge The next slide you will see shows 4 images unrelated to the story previously discussed. Try to form a sentence using the new words for each of the images. Now try to form one sentence that uses all 4 words…
