Coaching & Check-Ins Why it Makes Sense A study* conducted by Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island indicated that subjects enrolled in a weight loss program lost an average of 9% of their body weight when assigned a health care coach, mentor, or peer support o vs. average 6% for those who did not have a coach or peer assigned to them o At least 50% were able to lose 10%+ of their total body weight with support from a coach, peer, or mentor Coaches focused on principles of behavioral modification, and convincing the subjects to make a commitment towards a healthier lifestyle, tomorrow and for the rest of their lives. *The randomized controlled pilot study ran for 24 weeks in July 2012, and included 44 obese participants. The coaches, peers, and mentors met with their subjects 12 times over the period of 24 weeks, and supplemented during off-meeting weeks with phone check-ins.
