Vocabulary Unit 8 Flushed Away

Animosity The Toad felt nothing but animosity towards rats and mice because his former owner, Prince Charles, had replaced him with a mouse as a pet.

Animosity (n.) strong dislike; bitter hostility

Apathy When Le Frog delayed his search for Roddy and Rita by five hours so that he could eat dinner, it suggested a certain apathy for his mission.

Apathy (n.) a lack of feeling, emotion or interest

Commend Sid commended Roddy’s home for its comfort and poshness. In fact, he liked it so much he decided to replace Roddy as the house pet.

Commend (v.) to praise, express approval; to present as worthy of attention; to commit to the care of

Compatible Although they were not very good at their jobs, Spike and Whitey were compatible henchmen who worked very well together.

Compatible (adj.) able to get along or work well together; capable of use with some other model or system

Condolence When Roddy learned what happened to Rita’s father, he expressed his condolences.

Condolence (n.) an expression of sympathy

Consecrate Once his owners leave, Roddy consecrates the apartment as his party space.

Consecrate (v.) to make sacred, hallow; to set apart for a special purpose

Decrepit It wasn’t such a bad thing that Rita’s ship, the Jammy Dodger, was destroyed. It was rather decrepit and in need of repairs.

Decrepit (adj.) old and feeble; worn- out, ruined

Deride At first, Roddy derided the sewer as a dirty, disgusting place to live.

Deride (v.) to ridicule, laugh at with contempt

Ingenuous Having no clue that Sid planned to replace him as the pet of the house, Roddy ingenuously invited him to share the giant apartment.

Ingenous (adj.) innocent, simple; frank, sincere

Multifarious Once in the sewer system, Roddy found a multifarious city – nearly as diverse and immense as the city of London above ground.

Multifarious (adj.) having great variety, numerous and diverse

Obsolete Once he enjoyed the freedom of life in the sewer, Roddy’s old life as a captive pet seemed obsolete.

Obsolete (adj.) out-of-date, no longer in use

Omnivorous Sid was an omnivorous rat, eating everything he could find in the apartment – including chocolate cake.

Omnivorous (adj.) eating every kind of food; eagerly taking in everything, having a wide variety of tastes

Parsimonious Because of the immense size of Rita’s family, their small dinners were rather parsimonious.

Parsimonious (adj.) stingy, miserly; meager, poor; small

Quandary After Roddy demonstrated that Rita’s “ruby” was, in fact, fake, she was in a quandary about how to pay for her family.

Quandary (n.) state of perplexity or doubt

Recalcitrant Le Toad’s recalcitrant henchmen refused to leave until after their five-hour dinner was over.

Recalcitrant (adj.) stubbornly disobedient, resisting authority

Stultify Rita and Roddy used liquid nitrogen to stultify some of the villains.

Stultify (v.) to make ineffective or useless, cripple; to have a dulling effect on
