St George’s Day

St George’s Day is a special day for people in many different countries. In Brazil, Italy, China, Portugal, Greece, India, Canada, Lebanon, Ethiopia and Malta, Saint George is remembered. St George is special to England like St Patrick is special to Ireland.

Why is Saint George Special? What did he do? Some of the things we know are true and some is made up. First the true story.

George was a good Christian soldier in the Roman army. He was a special guard to the Emperor.

George was ordered to kill Christians but he would not do it. He told the emperor that he was wrong to order him to and that he was a Christian too.

The Emperor was very angry and ordered George to be killed. He died on 23 rd April.

Over a thousand years ago The King of England ordered that Saint George should be the special Saint for England.

Stories began to be told about Saint George. These stories were not true but some people believed them. Here is one story!

Once upon a time Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a good king, and his little Princess, whom he loved dearly. The Princess was as sweet as a rose, she was kind and beautiful.

One day a dreadful thing happened to the king and his people. Through the gates of the city, came a huge, fierce and terrifying dragon!

Princess was fastened to the oak tree and there was the dragon close by ready to eat her.

Saint George’s Day Celebrations

On St. George’s Day, April 23 rd, people wear a red rose pinned to their clothes. Some people paint their faces with the Cross of Saint George!

On the Sunday nearest St. George’s Day most towns and cities hold a service at the war memorial followed by a march through the town. This Salvation Army Band are marching in London.

There are many different events that take place to celebrate St. George’s Day……… but they all usually have…. George and the Dragon!

Little plays are put on where Saint George slays the dragon.

There are dancers who dance traditional dances. These are Morris Dancers.
