Hunters Safety

Be Prepared ● Weather you are going out for a few hours or a two week adventure in the woods ● ALWAYS BE PREPARED

Hunters Education Course ● Hunter Education is required for hunters born AFTER January 1, 1986 who intend to hunt in Units 7, 13-15, and 20. The following apply: ● If you were born after January 1, 1986 and are 16 years old or older, you must have successfully completed a certified Basic Hunter Education course. ● If you were born after January 1, 1986 and are under 16 years old, you must have: successfully completed a certified Basic Hunter Education course –OR- ● hunt under the direct immediate supervision of a licensed hunter who is either: ● 16 years old or older and has successfully completed a certified Hunter Education course OR ● born on or before January 1, 1986 ● BASIC HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE OPTIONS: ● There are three ways to take a Basic Hunter Education class: ● Traditional course – longer multi-day course ● Independent Study course – 2 parts - workbook home study, 8 hour field day ● Online course – 2 parts – online study and test, ½ day field day

Harvest Tags ● Your harvest # must be written on the back of your license ● Valid from date of issue until the following June ● Must punch immediately after kill ● Must keep it on your possession until game has arrived at processing place (home) ● 15 days after bag limit/ End of season to report to F&G (even if you get nothing) ●

What not to do ● Never attempt to sell or buy Wild Game ● Except hares ● You may not shoot on, from, or across any drivable surface of any constructed road or highway ● Do not heard harass or molest game with a motorized vehicle ● No helicopters unless its to rescue people ● No bows / crossbows that shoot multiple arrows ● No automatic weapons or shot guns larger than 10 guage

Unit 13 ● Caribou and moose must include all edible meat ● Poor trimming is illegal- Can't debone in field ● Front quarters and hind quarters and ribs must remain naturally attatched to bone ● Must leave evidence of sex of animal

Prepping for the hunt ● Along with a well inspected firearm and ammo and your license tags and permits (leave a paper trail) you need your survival gear.

Gear ● Tent (waterproof it ) ● Tarps ● Warm Sleeping bag ● Water (can't bring to much) ● Compass and map GPS ● Knives and sharpener ● Ax – chainsaw ● Rope ● Wool Socks ● Gloves ● Dry clothes ● First Aid kit Healthy Trail Snacks Hearty Meals Vitamins (Emergen-C are great and easy ) Reliable hunting partners Waterproof hunting boots with support and grip Waterproof pants and coat Extra shoes and socks Fire starter Spare parts and tools (flats are common extra spark plugs are great too) Radios Headlight Flashlight Binoculars

After the kill- keep it Clean Cool and Dry Make sure that you remove the hide and gut your animal before it starts to spoil If its hotter than 60 degrees out the process will start very quickly and rapidly Its recommended that if near water to let your game soak minutes If not you need to hang it up and spray down with citric acid and water to that it runs off and creates a hard crusty coating Keep a tarp around the meat to keep rain away but dont seal tight needs to breath

ATV users ● Wear your helmet! ● Gloves, Long Pants, Long Sleeve shirt, Body Armor, Boots, Eye Protection ● Inspect your vehicles ● Do not over load and risk breaking or tipping make multiple trips ● Tread lightly, stick to the trail don't create your own

Wearing the Proper Gear ● Make sure your clothing has reflective materials ● Make sure it is going to keep you warm and dry ● Make sure that you can be seen! ● Camoflauge may be great to stay hidden from the moose but you don't want to be in the wrong spot wrong time and NOT BE SEEN! ● Orange and Green are excellent highlight colors that make it easier to be seen.

Basic Gun Safety ● ALWAYS KEEP THE GUN POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION ● ALWAYS KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO SHOOT ● ALWAYS KEEP GUN UNLODED UNTIL READY TO USE ● REMEMBER TO TREAT EVERY GUN AS IF IT WAS LOADED
