Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Ghada Almeshali AlBandri AlZahid

Definition: Carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the palm side of the wrist. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Definition: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome affects the carpal canal at the base of the palm. The canal contains many tendons and the median nerve. When the carpal tunnel pressure reaches a certain level it interferes with median nerve function and produces symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Healthy Carpal TunnelCarpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition affecting women more than men. The bones of the wrist are known as the carpus and they form a gutter shape. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Boundaries: -Carpal bones. -Flexor retinaculum. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Contains: -Median nerve. -Flexor tendons: A-Flexor digitorum superficialis tendons. B-Flexor digitorum profundus tendons. C-Flexor pollicus longus. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism or rheumatoid arthritis may cause carpal tunnel syndrome by changing the size of the nerve. Continued or increased pressure eventually causes edema in the epineurium and endoneurium Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Anything that compromises the space available for the median nerve in the carpal tunnel can cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Local structural changes at the wrist are known causes, including: 1) Distal radius fractures. 2) Blunt trauma with associated hemorrhage and swelling 3) Tumors such as: lipoma and ganglion cysts. 4) A wide variety of metabolic diseases and overuse syndromes also have been described as causes of CTS. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common median nerve compression syndrome and the most common peripheral mononeuropathy. Median nerve

Median Nerve is the most important nerve in the hand because it innervates skin On the thumb, index and middle fingers and lateral side of the ring finger. Median nerve

It supplies a variable number of the small hand muscles especially to the thumb. Supplies muscles of thenar muscles Atrophy of thenar muscles = ape thumb deformity ( in sever cases)

Symptoms Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome 1)Pain. 2)Numbness in the hands. 3)Some people feel like their fingers are swollen, even though no swelling is present. 4)They may have trouble distinguishing between hot and cold. Symptoms may be present in one or both hands (usually symptoms develop in the dominant hand first):

The clinical syndrome is diagnosed by history and physical examination. Electrodiagnostic testing is the objective method used to measure median nerve dysfunction at the wrist and confirm the clinical diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
