WEDNESDAY MAY 20, 2015 Week 18 Chem/Comm Spring 2015

WELCOME TO CLASS! 1.Sit in your assigned seat. 2.Take out the following items: 1.Stoichiometry notebook 2.POL Outline and other POL stuff 3.Blank sheet of paper 3.Answer the following catalyst on your blank sheet of paper: 4.Given the following balanced equation: 3BaSO 4 + Mg 3 P 2  Ba 3 P 2 + 3MgSO 4 a. Find the mole ratios of BaSO 4 to Ba 3 P 2 b. Find the mass of BaSO 4 and Ba 3 P 2 using the periodic table. c. Set up the dimensional analysis to find the mass of BaSO 4 needed to produce 100g of Ba 3 P 2.

AGENDA 1. Catalyst and pass out grades 2. Grades talk 3. POL clarifications 3. Outline Check (everyone stays in the classroom for this). 4. Optional study session part 2.

GRADES TALK Look at the grades I passed out to you. With a pen, highlighter, or marker, mark the assignments that you turned in that you have a “0” or no grade for. If you have no grade, you turned this assignment in late and it is really hard for me to go back and see what you’ve turned in after the deadline. Then, come up and talk to me and give me your grade sheet. I will locate your assignments right in front of you and/or grade them on the spot.

POL CLARIFICATION

POL DUE DATES PLEASE SEE THE CALENDAR ON MY WEEBLY FOR REFERENCE Thursday, May 14: Evidence choices DUE Thursday, May 21: Scripts DUE Tuesday, May 26: PowerPoints DUE Wednesday, May 27: POLs begin!

CHEMISTRY CHOOSE 1 ESSENTIAL SKILL Essential Skill2-7: Balancing Equations2-3: Critical Reasoning 2-12: Unit Conversions ExplanationShow how you balance equations; do a “live” balancing problem that is fairly challenging. Explain how you solve problems; solve a problem “live” Explain the steps involved in doing unit conversions; do a problem “live” EvidenceOnce Upon an Atom (or Flowchart deliverable if you did it on this topic) Chemistry Therapy 1 Unit conversions Quiz (or Flowchart deliverable if you did it on this topic)

CHEMISTRY Example script for Chemistry Therapy “The chemistry therapy assignment tested our ability to not only do word problems, but to explain how to solve them. The most important aspect of this deliverable was to show our thought process, which I’ll be showing you here. There were different parts of the chemistry therapy, namely [ list some or all of the parts of the report, such as hypothesis, problem statement etc.]. I will discuss [name the one or more aspects that you will discuss]. For this part, we were supposed to [tell what the part required of you]. So, in reading this problem [read your sample problem that you are doing live], we can see that this aspect [name the aspect of the paper you’re discussing] would be [discuss the aspect] because [give the REASONING behind your thought process].”

COMMUNICATIONS CHOOSE 1 ESSENTIAL SKILL Essential Skill2-6: Analysis2-5: Film Techniques ExplanationExplain your research process and how you came to conclusions about North Korea Explain 4 film techniques that your documentary used in detail. EvidenceNorth Korea Research Paper Mini documentary OR film techniques deliverable

COMMUNICATIONS Example script for North Korea research paper “We watched a couple of documentaries in class, “Inside North Korea” and “Frontline”. In order to write my research paper, though, I had to look at other sources, namely [list website A] and [list website B]. At website A I learned that North Korea is [list what you learned] and this [agreed or disagreed] with [list documentary]. At website B I learned [list what you learned] and this [agreed or disagreed] with [list documentary]. Due to all of this information that I gathered, I synthesized it such that I compared and contrasted the pieces of information and I came to the conclusion that [list a conclusion that you made]. “

COMMUNICATIONS Example script for Film techniques: “In communications, we made a documentary and we had to use a certain number of film techniques, specifically 10 techniques to earn a 4. I will be discussing 4 of the techniques my group used with respect to which ones I chose and why I chose them. In this clip/screenshot of my documentary, you can see I used [list 1 st technique here] because I wanted to get [list the effect you wanted it to have on the audience]. In this clip/screenshot of my documentary, you can see I used [list 2 nd technique here] because I wanted to get [list the effect you wanted it to have on the audience]. In this clip/screenshot of my documentary, you can see I used [list 3 rd technique here] because I wanted to get [list the effect you wanted it to have on the audience]. In this clip/screenshot of my documentary, you can see I used [list 4 th technique here] because I wanted to get [list the effect you wanted it to have on the audience].”
