Grade 1 – Topic V How Things Move – Gravity Big Idea 5: Earth in Space and Time Division of Academics - Department of Science

BENCHMARK OBJECTIVES SC.1.E.5.2 Explore the Law of Gravity by demonstrating that Earth’s gravity pulls any object on or near Earth toward it even though nothing is touching it. SC.1.N.1.1 Raise questions about the natural world, investigate them in teams through free explorations, and generate appropriate explanations based on those explorations. SC.1.N.1.2 Using the five senses as tools, make careful observations, describe objects in terms of number, shape, texture, size, weight, color, and motion, and compare their observations with others. SC.1.N.1.3 Keep records as appropriate – such as pictorial and written records – of investigations conducted. SC.1.N.1.4 Ask “How do you know?” in appropriate situations. Division of Academics - Department of Science

SC.1.E.5.2: Explore the Law of Gravity by demonstrating that Earth’s gravity pulls any object on or near Earth toward it, even if nothing is touching the object. Division of Academics - Department of Science

Before we discuss Gravity - Let’s Play a Quick Review Game! Students get into your teams! Each team should have a response board and marker. For each of the following slides, you have to write your answer on your team’s response board. If your answer is correct, the team gets a point. If not, you do not get a point. Division of Academics – Department of Science

_______ is a push or pull. Number 1: Division of Academics – Department of Science FORCE

___________ is a force that pulls things downward. Division of Academics – Department of Science Number 2: GRAVITY

________ is how fast or slow things move. Division of Academics – Department of Science Number 3: SPEED

__________ is how heavy or light something is. Division of Academics – Department of Science Number 4: WEIGHT

What do YOU know about gravity? Division of Academics – Department of Science What happens when a ball is thrown up in the air? Watch what happens. What is gravity? What does gravity do?

What makes thing fall down? It’s a force called gravity.

GravityGravity is a force that is always pulling objects down. Try Discovery Interactive Book: Exploration: Gravity Exploration: Gravity

What makes things fall down? Gravity is the force that pulls things toward the center of the Earth. Division of Academics - Department of Science

Gravity!! Gravity pulls things downhill. Gravity causes the boy to slide down the hill on his sled. Division of Academics - Department of Science

Gravity Division of Academics – Department of Science Did you learn anything new about gravity? Let’s add new information to our list.

Gravity Division of Academics – Department of Science Did you learn anything new about gravity? Let’s add new information to our list.

Gravity Pulls things down toward the center of the Earth Allows us to measure weight Can act on things far away Keeps objects in orbit Gets weaker as you move farther from Earth Division of Academics - Department of Science

HOW THINGS FALL Take two objects that are different sizes, shapes, and weight. Hold the two objects at the same height. (shoulder height) Drop the two objects at the same time. Record which order the objects hit the ground in your Science Journal. In your journal, write why you think you got the results you did. Division of Academics - Department of Science

Meet “Fearless” Felix Division of Academics - Department of Science

What do you Now know about gravity? Division of Academics – Department of Science What is gravity? What does gravity do? What is affected by gravity? List some examples how gravity affects us everyday.
