UNIT TOPIC: VOWEL SOUNDS LESSON TOPIC: MONOTHONGS
OBJECTIVES : At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1.define vowel sounds; 2. define monothongs ; 3. identify the phonetic symbol of each of the monothong sounds and 4.identify the vowel sounds in words.
INTRODUCTION Vowel sounds are sounds produced with the flow of air from the lungs. There is no obstruction- partial or total, in the production of vowel sounds. Vowel sounds are divided into three, namely: monothongs, diphthongs and triphthongs. EXAMPLES Monothongs- / e /, / i /e.g. Men, pick Diphthongs- / au /, / ei / e.g. cow, gate Triphthongs- / au∂ /, / ai∂ / e.g. Flower, flier
MONOTHONGS “Mono” refers to one. So, monothong refers to a single vowel sound. For example / e / as in head, egg etc / u / as in put, look etc Note : Monothongs can also be referred to as pure vowels. There are twelve pure vowel sounds in English language.
