What is the life of a Saola? By Isabelle Gu and Sonia Kang

A Saola is a critically endangered animal . What is a Saola? A Saola is a critically endangered animal . Saola are recognized from their two attracting horns that have very sharp ends. These horns are parallel and are found on both males and females Saola. They are known for striking features. Saola have white markings on the face and large maxillary glands on their muzzle that are used to mark territory or attract mates. It has a white stripe above each eye representing eyebrows. They have a short dark brown coat with a black stripe that runs down the spine. This majestic creature was discovered in May 1992. They are said to be cousins of cattle and a resemblance of antelope. Their adult weight is about approximately 100 kg and their height is about 150 cm. Saola can live up to eight to nine years.

Where do Saola live? Though scientists have little information about them, Saola are said to live in the Annamite Mountains in Vietnam and Laos, which is a beautiful rainforest. These are maps and pictures of where Saola live.

How many Saola are left in the world? This rare majestic creature has almost come to its end Scientist predict that there are only around 750 (or less) of these elegant creatures left in the world. Why are there so little Saola in the world? As the forest disappears Saola fade with them. They’re often caught in snares sets for wild boars. The main threats of these graceful animals are hunting and fragments (traps), also loss of habitat!

Saola’s Diet Saola are said to live on fig leaves, leafy plants, and stems that border rivers. Some Saola are said to eat berries, fruits, and seeds. Saola suffer from loss of food because their habitat is disappear ring. Saola are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. The plants provide enough nutrition for their body.

What animals have Saola as prey? The magnificent animal has many predators such as leopards, tigers, and dholes. These are saola’s main predators. But these harmless creatures have many more enemies. Saola only have their beautiful horns to defend themselves. But, humans have taken off their only protection. This is one of the effects that made Saola disappear.

How we can help? We can help by: Donating Spread the Word! So that organizations have enough money to fly to Vietnam and feed them rescue them and bring them somewhere they’ll be safe from hunters! Spread the Word! Tell your friends! Make Signs! One small person can make a big difference to the Saola’s population! Donate at: http://www.savethesaola.org/
