Identifying Similes and Metaphors

Similes and Metaphors Figurative language helps the reader to visualize what is happening – Similes and metaphors are two types. – They should not be taken literally. Knowing the difference can help improve writing

The difference Simile Compares two unlike objects Uses words like or as He ran as fast as a gazelle. Metaphor Makes a comparison Does not use like or as States that one thing is or was something else Love is a well-read book.

Simile or Metaphor? My mother is a superhero with no wings. The trash weighed as much as whale. His hair became like silk after he washed it. Mr. Mayberry’s homework was a thorn in my flesh. An alligator’s skin, rough like the bark of a tree, is a coveted commodity. Identify the sentences as a simile or metaphor.
