Just the Facts: Oral Health of AIAN 3-5 Year Olds Sources: The IHS 2014 Oral Health Survey of AI/AN Preschool Children National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES),

Two is Too Late!

Variation by IHS Area

Just the Facts: Oral Health of AIAN 6-9 Year Olds

Just the Facts: Oral Health of AIAN Year Olds Data Sources: The IHS Oral Health Survey of AI/AN Adolescents National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES),

Just the Facts: Oral Health of AIAN Adults  68% of AIAN year olds had untreated decay.  79% had lost at least one tooth  96% had gingivitis  36% had periodontal disease

Dental Access  Nationally, dental access for AIAN people hovers around 29% while about 45% of the US population visited the dentist in the past year.  Barriers to dental access include a lack of dental providers, long geographical distances between dental providers, and limited services available.  To ration dental treatment, AIAN people often are faced with complicated call-in systems and long waits for appointments.

Baby Teeth Matter  Swinomish  Puyallup  Tulalip  Port Gamble  Skokomish  Sophie Trettevick  Grand Ronde Objectives Increase the number of 0-5 year olds who receive dental access, with an emphasis on 0-2 year olds. Increase the number of 0-5 year olds who receive comprehensive dental care at their IHS/Tribal dental program.

One Year Results

What can YOU do?  Tribal Policies -well-child visits and collaboration with medical and community health partners. -tribal daycare -case management -real open access  Be picky when hiring new dentists  Consider alternative workforce models
