Literacy Teaching and Managing a Reading Lesson (Primary) NIPT WS08

Literacy Working together in the workshops will involve… Confidentiality Participation Contributing to group learning Asking questions/clarifying issues Taking responsibility for your own learning Please check that your phone is off for the duration of the workshop

Literacy Focus of the Workshop Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life Reading procedures Choosing appropriate texts Planning and teaching a reading lesson Assessing reading development

Literacy Recent Developments

Literacy Definition Literacy includes the capacity to read, understand and critically appreciate various forms of communication including spoken language, printed text, broadcast media, and digital media. (p.2) Circular 0056/2011 – Initial Steps in the implementation of the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy.

Literacy Different Forms of Communication Spoken Language Printed Text Broadcast Media Digital media

Literacy What does a Reading lesson look like in your classroom?

Literacy Key Message 1 READING MUST BE EXPLICITLY TAUGHT “Hearing reading on its own, is not teaching reading”

Literacy What do we Teach? Explicitly teach reading skills Explicitly teach comprehension skills Explicitly teach critical literacy Where possible link reading, writing and oral language Oral Language is an essential component of every lesson and must be explicitly taught

Literacy How Do We Teach Reading? 1. Teacher Read Aloud 2. Modelled Reading 3. Language Experience Approach 4. Shared Reading 5. Guided Reading 6. Independent Reading

Literacy What Text Will I Use? Text: Any form of communication from which meaning is created (First Steps 2004) Printed Text recipes, reports, diaries, timetables, menus, biographies, diagrams, novels, newspaper articles, comic books, the reader, poetry etc. also text from History, Science, Music, Drama, Visual Arts, PE, Maths, Geography books. Broadcast Media Digital Media

Literacy Key Message 2 YOU CAN CREATE A GOOD READING LESSON FROM ANY TEXT It is how you structure the reading lesson that is important.

Literacy Key Message 3 PUPILS MUST BE EXPLICITLY TAUGHT HOW TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY AND COLLABORATIVELY

Literacy Organisation for Reading Mini lessons to explicitly teach the pupils how to: Work collaboratively Choose a book e.g. Five finger test Work independently during Guided Reading Problem solve effectively (e.g. 3 person rule) Listener & Speaker Rules Buddy Read Independent Reading: USSR, DEAR ERIC, etc.

Literacy Key Message 4 At Infant level, the primary focus of the reading lesson is on fostering a love of books while developing language skills, comprehension, knowledge of conventions of print, phonological awareness and sight vocabulary in context and through play.

Literacy The Reading Lesson

Literacy

Abstract from ‘Boy Tales of Childhood’ by Roald Dahl...I lifted the heavy glass lid of the Gobstopper jar and dropped the mouse in. Then I replaced the lid as silently as possible. My heart was thumping like mad and my hands had gone all sweaty. “And one Bootlace please” I heard Twaites saying. When I turned round, I saw Mrs Prachett holding out the Bootlace with her filthy fingers. “I don’t want the lot of you troopin in ‘ere if only one of you is buyin” she screamed at us. “Now beat it! Go on, get out!” As soon as we were outside, we broke into a run. “Did you do it?” they shouted at me. “Of course I did!” I said “Well done you!” they cried. “What a super show!” I felt like a hero. I was a hero. It was marvellous to be so popular.

Literacy Text Organisation of reading Linkage with oral and writing Reading skills at text level Reading skills at sentence level Reading skills at word level Comprehension skills before reading Comprehension skills during reading Comprehension skills after reading

Literacy ACTIVITY Planning a Reading Lesson TASK: Use blank grid in NQT Booklet 1.Choose a text appropriate to your pupils. 2.Decide how reading will be organised and what procedures you will use. 3.Decide what reading skills can be taught from this text. 4.Choose what comprehension skills can be taught using this text. 5.Think about how you will link this reading lesson with oral and written work. 6.Think about how you can gather information in assessing reading development within the lesson.

Literacy Key Message 5 USE A WIDE RANGE OF ASSESSMENT METHODS AND TOOLS WHEN ASSESSING READING

Literacy

An Effective Reading Lesson Reading is explicitly taught Vary your approaches: modelled, shared, guided and independent reading Pupils are taught to read in a variety of group settings Use a variety of texts At Infant level, the focus is on fostering a love of books while developing language skills, sight vocabulary in context and phonological awareness A wide range of assessment methods and tools are used when evaluating reading
