Trustee vs Delegate Model of Representation

Bell work- Answer in your notes What is a Delegate? What is a Trustee? Explain your response. A Delegate is “One who acts on behalf of another” A Trustee is “One to whom something is trusted” BW:  What is a delegate?  What is a trustee? Webster's defines it as:  one acting on behalf of another vs. one to whom something is trusted. Have students brainstorm common examples they can relate to:  getting groceries off of a list, driving someone home, etc.Maybe have them think about student government?  How could these terms apply to Congress?What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

More Bell work… Brainstorm examples of a trustee and delegate in real life. Explain your reasoning. Think about CFHS’s student government. Are they more “delegate” or “trustee”? Why? How could these terms apply to Congress? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each (Trustee vs Delegate)? Which issues demand more of a trustee than a delegate or vice versa? In the same group, look over the Enumerated powers of Congress. Pick 5 powers Fill out the T- Chart, deciding which of the 5 powers are more Trustee or more Delegate. Explain your reasoning. Look at the list of issues currently affecting America. Pick 5 issues. Discuss with your group if they are more Trustee or Delegate and place in your T-chart. Explain your reasoning. War, Taxes, Civil Rights, etc. Have groups share their responses

SB 1070 Demographics Arizona Republic Poll: 80% of Republicans support SB 1070 58% of Democrats oppose SB 1070 and only 38% of Democrats support the new law. 36% of people age 18 to 34 support SB 1070, while 52% oppose it. People 35 to 54 favor SB 1070 by a margin of 64% for and 26% against. People over 55 favor SB 1070 by a margin of 63% for and 31% against. An interesting poll reported in the Arizona Republic Sunday July 25th http://tucsoncitizen.com/view-from-baja-arizona/2010/07/25/support-or-opposition-to-sb-1070-in-arizona-depends-on-who-you-are/ While overall Arizonans support SB 1070, the amount of support or opposition depends on political identity, ethnicity, income  and age.

More SB 1070 Demographics Rasmussen Survey 71% of likely voters in AZ favor the Immigration law -24% oppose it 47% of likely AZ voters think it will be good for AZ’s economy 35% think it will be bad for the economy 9% think it will have no impact
