Nurture: -Dexter’s earliest memory was that of his mother’s bloody murder and sitting in a pool of her blood for days. He then was nurtured by step father Harry Morgan who taught Dexter a code to live by, only kill people who deserve it. Dexter also experienced the actions of his long lost brother, Brian, who was a serial killer who tried to join Dexter but ultimately, Dexter had to decide to kill him. This ultimately shaped him and kept him on the track of killing only good people

Nature: -Dexter’s brother, Brian Moser, was also a serial killer dubbed “The Ice Truck Killer” in season 1. The difference between them was that Brian killed innocent women and left them displayed to the public whereas Dexter sticks to a strict code of killing only bad people.
