What do you see?

The map above shows the location of the twenty most populous cities of the world in 1950 and in 2000. a. Describe the major changes that have occurred over this 50 year period. b. Account for the changes in the locational pattern you have determined. c. Several countries are identified as having more than 40% of the population in the capital city. What are some of the possible reasons for and consequences of this type of concentration? What term is used to describe cities like this?

a. Describe the major changes that have occurred over this 50 year period. Rubric – Listing 1 - 3 regions 1 point, Listing all regions 2 points, Listing all regions and 1-5 cities 3 points, Listing all regions and 6- 20 cities 4 points WORTH 4 POINTS Describe where populations were in 1950 and where they are today – be clear, specific and complete. For 1950 there are at least 6 things you need to highlight. For 2000 there are at least seven important changes.

a. Describe the major changes that have occurred over this 50 year period. Rubric – Listing 1 - 3 regions 1 point, Listing all regions 2 points, Listing all regions and 1-5 cities 4 points, Listing all regions and 6- 20 cities 4 points WORTH 4 POINTS Populations in 1950 were located in Western Europe: Paris, London, Ruhr (Dortmund Essen), Milan, Rome. Russia had two – St. Petersburg and Moscow. North America had 6 – Los Angeles, Mexico City, Chicago, Detroit, NYC and Boston. South Asia had 2 – Kolkota and Mumbai. East Asia had three Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing South America had one Rio de Janeiro.

a. Describe the major changes that have occurred over this 50 year period. Population in 2000 North America lost three city, but kept, NYC, LA and Mexico City. Europe no longer had any cities in the top 20. South Asia added 3 – Karachi, Delhi and Hyderabad. Southeast Asia added 3 Bangkok, Jakarta and Manila. East Asia added Seoul, South Korea North Africa added Cairo South America Added 3 – Bogota, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo..

b. Account for the changes in the locational pattern you have determined. 3 points: 1 point for the shift, I point for a growing population, 1 point for reasons a population increases. Population has shifted from MDC to LDC. OR Population has shifted to below the Brandt Line. This is most-likely because population in LDCs continues to grow at a faster rate of natural increase than MDCs. Reasons for increasing population… could be a desire for larger families so children can be used to create income through their labor. Etc

These countries most-likely have primate cities. Several countries are identified as having more than 40% of the population in the capital city. What are some of the possible reasons for and consequences of this type of concentration? What term is used to describe cities like this? 3 points: 1 point for the term primate city. 1 point for discussion development. 1 point for discussion of access to high order services. These countries most-likely have primate cities. This indicates a lack of development. These countries lack infrastructure, which would allow for a more even dispersal of settlement. Therefore people are drawn to cities in order to have access to higher order services like hospitals.
