United Way of Greater Atlanta Tocqueville Society Answering “A Call to Action”: United Way of Greater Atlanta’s Response to Human Trafficking 1

Our Challenge 2 Atlanta ranks among the top 10 cities in the United States for child sex trafficking are girls sold monthly Average age of entry 14 years Weekly pimp income is $32,000/per girl Approximately 7200 men in GA purchase sex monthly

3 Atlanta’s underground sex economy is $290 million per year; the global market exceeds $12 billion.

A Call to Action: Women of Tocqueville Women’s Leadership Breakfast President Jimmy Carter served as keynote for United Way of Greater Atlanta’s Women’s Leadership Breakfast. President Carter highlighted his current book “A Call to Action: Women, Violence, Religion and Power.” There, he discussed human sex trafficking and identifies Atlanta as a national hub. In direct response to President Carter’s “ Call to Action,” United Way of Greater Atlanta identified the need to begin working to strengthen efforts toward addressing human trafficking. 4

Current Investment Current Investment - youthSpark The Voices Project works in collaboration with Fulton County Juvenile Court and provides direct service prevention for girls at high risk of being trafficked. Additional Support In direct support through City of Refuge, YWCA of Greater Atlanta, Georgia Center for Child Advocacy, Covenant House Georgia, and CHRIS Kids Indirect Support United Way invests in scores of programs that provide protective and preventative services to youth and their families. 5

Our Future Goals: Proposed Interventions Reinforce Alignment with current human trafficking and protection leaders  Distribute survey to current grantee partners  Increase alignment with United Way Worldwide Serve on cohort group to discuss learnings and best practices around addressing the issue. 9
