Aims of this evening: Nod y Noson: Understand issues that children may encounter when using the internet; Share helpful tips for limiting the dangers of using the internet; Introduce the ‘Online Learning Platform’, HWB+; Understand how HWB+ can be used at home to help children with their learning.

Dangers of the Internet Peryglon y Rhyngrwyd Issues that your child may encounter when using the internet can be categorised as follows: Conduct/Ymddygiad Children must understand the impact of their online activity. They must understand that when using the internet, they must not share any personal information with strangers.

Dangers of the Internet Peryglon y Rhyngrwyd Content/Cynnwys Some online content is not suitable for children and may be hurtful or harmful. This is true for content accessed through social networks, online games, blogs and websites. As well as obvious harmful content such as adult themed websites, children must also be aware of the consequences of downloading illegal or copyrighted content such as music.

Friends lists or addresses must be regularly checked and edited to ensure children are contacting people they actually know. Children must also understand the importance of telling a trusted adult if they have been the victim of online abuse.

Children must understand to keep their personal information private, how to block pop-ups and spam emails, how to turn off ‘in-app’ purchasing where possible and only use a family email addresses when filling in registrations or online forms.

Social Networks Rhwydwaith Cymdeithasol Do you know what the LEGAL age for using Facebook is? Do you know what the LEGAL age for using Twitter is? Do you know what the LEGAL age for using Instagram is? ALL SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES HAVE A LEGAL MINIMUM AGE LIMIT OF 13 YEARS OLD Children under 13 should not have any access to these sites even if it is through a parent’s own page or supervised use. 13 13 13

5 SMART Tips to Help Children Stay Safe Online Safe – Keep safe by not giving out personal information i.e. phone number, email, passwords Meet – Don’t meet up with strangers met online. Remember that ‘Online Friends’ are still strangers. Accepting – Accepting emails, messages, files etc from people you don’t know can lead to problems i.e. safety or viruses! Reliable – People may lie about who they are, their age etc online. Only chat to people you know. Tell – Tell a parent, carer or trusted adult if something feels wrong or you think you’re being abused/bullied online.

What is HWB+? Beth ydy HWB+? A bilingual learning platform for every school in Wales; Blogs; Wikis; Discussion forums; Surveys; Free access to Office 365 (Microsoft Word/PowerPoint/ Excel/One Note); Free use of Encyclopaedia Britannica; Access school work from home via an internet device; A completely safe way for children to use the internet.

Bilingual Platform HWB+ will be in Welsh for the Welsh stream classes and English for the English stream classes. If a parent or child would prefer to use the opposite language then it can be changed at the top of the page.

Blogs A blog is a tool for individuals or groups of users to record opinions, information and views on a regular basis. Learners and teachers can use blogs to create pieces of writing that can be viewed and commented upon by a wider audience (users within your Hwb+ site).

Wikis A wiki is an ideal place for learners to collaborate on literacy-based activities within Hwb+. A wiki is a page that can be edited by multiple users and there are many examples of wikis on the internet, the most famous being Wikipedia.

Discussion Forums The discussion area of Hwb+ is similar to other online discussion forums. In class and year sites, teachers and learners can create discussion threads that others can respond to. Staff and learners can reply to other people’s posts in a discussion and images and links can also be added as necessary to complement the written work

Surveys Surveys can be created by teachers to collect responses from their learners. The results can be analysed individually and in a graphical summary. A variety of different question types can be used to make the process of responding easier and more effective.

Using HWB+ from home Using HWB from home is easy. Children will just need their username and password to log in at http://hwb.wales.gov.uk/ A useful tool from home is the ‘Homework Drop Box’. This tool enables children to upload anything they’ve done from home onto HWB for their teacher to see.

A safe way to use the internet HWB is completely safe as long as all parties: parents, children and teachers stick to the home school agreement. Each child must have their own agreement signed, not shared with a sibling. As you have seen this evening, children are at danger when using the internet. HWB provides them with a platform to use the internet safely whilst learning at the same time!

HWB+ Conduct/Ymddygiad Children must understand the impact of their online activity. They must understand that when using the internet, they must not share any personal information with strangers. By using HWB+, children will learn to keep their username and password safe. They will not be able to share information with children outside of Llanrhaeadr school.

HWB+ Content/Cynnwys Some online content is not suitable for children and may be hurtful or harmful. This is true for content accessed through social networks, online games, blogs and websites. HWB+ provides a safe way to understand and use blogs, networks and websites. There is no harmful content available.

They can only contact each other. They do have email access but this is monitored by school staff on a regular basis as well as any other actions made on HWB+.

On HWB+ children will not have access to harmful adverts, pop ups etc.
