Symbolism of Dragons Dragons are mythical creatures in multiple cultures around the world. In different cultures, they represent different concepts and values.

Chinese Dragons Statues and images of 4 legged serpent-like Chinese Dragons have been used in China for thousands of years. Chinese Dragons are usually benevolent, they cause good luck and good fortune. Chinese Dragons are most often associated with water, rivers, and the weather, but can have control over the other elements of earth, fire, or ice.

Those born in the year of the dragon in the Chinese zodiac are considered especially lucky. The image of the Dragon is used to represent the Emperor and his power, and has come to represent the national heritage of the Chinese people. Chinese Dragons

Western Dragons The modern word “dragon” comes from the Greek word “drako” for a sea serpent. Western Dragons are evil, huge, reptile-like, fire-breathing monsters. Both Western and Chinese Dragons can fly, but only Western Dragons have wings.

In Western culture dragons are most often associated with Medieval times. They are the classic evil which must be overcome. Western Dragons hoard and protect wealth, especially gold, inside castles or cave lairs. They demand virgin maid sacrifices, and they burn knights to a crisp. Western Dragons

Considering the symbolic nature of dragons in Western culture, either support or challenge Nye’s decision to end Beowulf’s tale with this epic battle. Consider Beowulf’s motives for fighting the dragon when he is an old man. Discuss your thoughts with your partner and then decide for yourself. Find and use a direct quote from the text to support your stance on this issue, and analyze the quote at the word level in 2-3 sentences.
