Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) Back to Basics Review course for the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam (MCCQE) part 1 to become a Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) Back to Basics is the 4-weeks review course to help with preparation for the MCCQE part 1 examination.

Use the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) objectives as your study guide www.mcc.ca http://mcc.ca/examinations/mccqe-part-i/exam-preparation-resources/ http://mcc.ca/fr/examens/eacmc-partie-i/ressources-preparatoires/ Your best resource (study guide) is the list of objectives available on the MCC website. If you haven’t done so already, familiarize yourself with the resources available on the MCC website. www.mcc.ca

Resources See the list of recommended references (The uOttawa Faculty of Medicine advises you not to rely solely on the Toronto Notes or similar student texts) http://mcc.ca/examinations/list-of-suggested-reference-books/ http://mcc.ca/fr/examens/liste-des-ouvrages-de-reference-dont-la-consultation-est-suggeree/ The MCC has a list of resources they use as reference for answers to examination questions. The list is available on the MCC website.

Back to Basics MCCQE part 1 is divided into: PHLEO Population health (C2LEO Consideration of the legal, ethical and organizational aspects of medicine are included) Medicine Obstetrics and gynecology Pediatrics Psychiatry Surgery Family medicine (a subscore given) Problem solving and clinical reasoning Total Score

Back to Basics Assessment of basic competency There is a predetermined cut score ~390 A candidate could do poorly in one discipline and well in another and pass http://mcc.ca/examinations/mccqe-part-i/scoring/#OverallScores http://mcc.ca/fr/examens/eacmc-partie-i/notation/ To pass the exam the candidate must meet or exceed the predetermined cut score.

Back to Basics Do MCC practice exam on their website Do the SAEE (self administered evaluating examination) These exams may not be as difficult but are useful for practice and to guide where to focus your studying Take advantage of all of the MCC resources, practice examinations and demos available.

Back to Basics Practice exams Do without interruption Do in one sitting, in time allotted Don’t use references during the test Get instant results Use to help focus your study time over next 4 weeks MCC practice exams may not be as difficult as MCCQE part 1 Use the practice examinations as a needs assessment as well as to prepare for the MCC style of online examinations. The instant feedback will guide you as to where you need to focus your studies.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) DSM-5 terminology will be used and DSM-IV-TR will be written in brackets. For answers to MCCQE Part I clinical decision-making write-in questions, candidates will continue to receive full marks for correct answers regardless of whether they use DSM-5 or DSM-IV-TR language. http://mcc.ca/2014/01/transition-to-dsm-5/ http://mcc.ca/fr/2014/01/adoption-terminologie-dsm-5/

Ottawa Notes and Ottawa Resources Most objectives have been covered during your training to date including in lectures, CBLs and clinical rotations MCC is in Ottawa—use their practice material Back to Basics lectures and PowerPoints Medical students have learned the vast majority of the content during the past 4 years. Use your past notes and uOttawa resources to help with your review and preparation.

Back to Basics 2 mandatory sessions - with some new and very important material Bioethics & the Law and Financial, Transition of Residency Check times Attendance will be taken This year Dr. Eva Tsai from the CMPA will be presenting the session known as bioethics and the law, this is the only component of Back to Basics which is considered mandatory and may include some new content.

Back to Basics Feedback (from your predecessors) Number of lectures: too many/too few Objectives addressed: most agreed Back to Basics was useful to prepare: most agreed More students agreed once they received their results 2013+2014 excellent pass rated for uOttawa Feedback from previous years is overall positive. Most students felt that Back to Basics lectures and material was very helpful in their preparation for MCC exams.

Back to Basics Recommendations to students from recent grads Use MCC objectives to study from**** Do practice exams**** Study like a job (schedule study time and breaks) Advice from past uOttawa graduates: use the MCC objectives, do the practice examinations and make a study schedule to ensure all areas of medicine are covered.

Back to Basics Exams can be stressful. If you need to discuss with someone, uOttawa has many resources including: Student Affairs: Dr. Laramée Academic Advisor: Alain Boisvenue Med Ed Office: Christiane Raymond Director, B2B: Heather Lochnan hlochnan@toh.on.ca Associate Dean: Dr. Forgie Your Faculty Advisor Examinations can be stressful, if you need advice or support before or after your examinations please feel free to contact us.

Evaluation by Students You need to complete evaluations in One45 for each session and at the end of lectures and block, as well as an overall evaluation We are looking for constructive suggestions We may also contact some of you after the MCCQE part I for your advice to future 4th year students about how to prepare for the exam Please complete evaluations in One45, we are looking for constructive comments that will be read by the lecturer.
