OBJECTIVE  SPI Calculate and interpret the mean, median, upper-quartile, lower-quartile, and interquartile range of a set of data.

Measures of Central Tendency Median Value The Median is the "middle number" (in a sorted list of numbers). To find the Median, place the numbers in value order and find the middle number. Mean The mean is the average of the numbers. It is easy to calculate: add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are. Mode To find the mode, or modal value, first put the numbers in order, then count how many of each number. A number that appears most often is the mode. If all numbers appear an equal amount then there is no mode. Range The Range is the difference between the lowest and highest values. To find it subtract the Largest #- smallest #

OBJECTIVE  SPI Calculate and interpret the mean, median, upper-quartile, lower-quartile, and interquartile range of a set of data.

Box and Whisker Plots Box and whisker plot is a way of displaying data. It has 5 parts. Lower extreme (lowest number in the data set) Lower quartile (1 st quartile) (median of the “lower” numbers) Median (2 nd quartile) (middle number of the data set) Upper quartile (3 rd quartile) median of the “upper” numbers) Upper extreme (highest number in the data set)

To find the quartiles

Look at what happens when you have to find the mean for your median

Range vs Interquartile Range  Range looks at the whole data Largest – smallest = range Interquartile Range looks at the data in the box Upper quartile – lowest quartile = interquartile range

EXIT TICKET  Discuss with your partner Which measure of central tendency do you use the most for box and whisker plots?

Thursday: BELL WORK Have a pencil and calculator on your desk. N2K Critical Thinking: Solve for the measures of central tendency and see which one is Show work for all. CR: Using the table answer the questions about the data. When done- turn in and work on project
