What is Climate? Climate is weather patterns over time and space (usually 30 years) Remember….weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular.
Depending on where you are on Earth, the climate can be very, very different. Make a list of things that you believe affect the climate in a certain area.

Understand the relationship between elevation and climate

2.6.1 Define Elevation Height of a region above sea level

2.6.2 Describe the relationship between elevation and temperature Air temperature decreases 2oC for every 300m increase in elevation Higher up we go; colder it gets; hence snow on mountain tops

2.6.2 Example similar distance from ocean similar latitude. La Paz & Rio de Janeiro similar distance from ocean similar latitude. La Paz is much colder because of higher elevation La Paz, Bolivia Elevation = 3600m Coldest month = 9oC Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Elevation = 61m Coldest month= 25oC

2.6.2 Describe the relationship between elevation and precipitation More precipitation on the windward side Changes from rain to snow with increasing elevation Very little rain on the leeward side (Rain shadow)

Cities higher up in a mountain have colder temperatures 2.6.3 Analyze relationship temperature and precipitation relative to a mountain system Cities higher up in a mountain have colder temperatures Cities on leeward side have little rain Cities on windward side have more rain

2.6.3 Example Match the city to the data 1113mm rain & 0oC coldest month 628mm rain & -12oC coldest month Vancouver Prince George Prince George Vancouver wind
