MARS CITY: More than an important NIBS STEM effort Dr. Kerry M. Joels Total Learning Research Institute Ryan M. Colker National Institute of Building Sciences FFC November 2014

Public Law , Sect. 809  Develop and maintain performance criteria for maintenance of life, safety, health, and public welfare for the built environment  Evaluate and prequalify building technology and products  Conduct related and needed investigations  Assemble, store, and disseminate technical data and related information Congress directed the Institute to “exercise its functions and responsibilities in four general areas………..”

The Institute at Work Industry Advocacy & Outreach Consultative Council Council on Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (CFIRE) Off-Site Construction Council (OSCC) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Commercial Workforce Credentialing Council (CWCC) National Council of Governments on Building Codes and Standards (NCGBCS) Facility Performance & Sustainability Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC) Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) High Performance Building Council (HPBC) National Mechanical Insulation Committee Facility Maintenance and Operation Committee (FMOC) Information Resources & Technology Whole Building Design Guide National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities Building Research Information Knowledgebase (BRIK) buildingSMART alliance National BIM Standard-U.S. Security & Disaster Preparedness Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) Multihazard Mitigation Council (MMC) Integrated Resilient Design Program Multihazard Risk Assessment/HAZUS

Why the Institute?  Concerns about the next generation of building professionals  Buildings are becoming increasingly complex  All students are building occupants  No national program to interest students in our work  Buildings are Cool!

The Criticality of Workforce Development  NIBS and the FMOC have been sponsoring the MARS CITY Facility OPS challenge to inspire students to look at the Building Sciences as an exciting career option  We have to compete for the best and brightest in a field that is becoming ever more technologically driven – BIM, information exchanges, CMMS/ CAFM/ IWMS systems, etc.

The NASA Space Act Agreement  NIBS, NASA and the Total Learning Research Institute, developer of MARS CITY, have partnered to create the FM simulation of the facility  But a base on Mars will require all the technology we are using on Earth

MARS CITY and FM State of the Art A Mars Base will be: A closed ecosystem with requirements for reliable and robust infrastructure O&M will be critical for survival Best practices inform not only the O&M field, but the MARS City simulation as well The project can serve as a demonstration of O&M technology beginning to be adopted in our industry

The MARS CITY Model View Definition  Level 200 BIM  Equipment specification using Omniclass codes  Revit file generation  COBie data conversion to the CMMS (TMA Systems)  Inventory structure maintained within the CMMS (use of SPie data where available)  Life Cycle information from the ISS

Specialized Equipment needed on MARS CITY  Real time sensors for atmospheric gases and pressure (partial pressure of oxygen)– any build up of harmful gases can be fatal  Real time monitoring of water quality – water for drinking and food production requires chemical analysis  Real time monitoring of electrical systems and power generation – sub-metering for subsystems, load distribution, emergency power requirements

Specialized Equipment needed on MARS CITY  Preventive maintenance of circulation fans, motors, filters with sensor notification  Wastewater advanced treatment equipment with real time TDS, Ph, and contaminant data  3D printers to make spare parts for plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems

The Facility OPS simulation  Creation of work orders for the advanced technology is affected by level of criticality (1= Life threatening, 6= PM), training of techs, and special tools and instrumentation required to operate these advanced systems

Mars City Facility Ops Challenge Simulation Request Received Conversion to Work Order Assigned to Tech Work is Completed Compare to Expert Solution

O&M Scenarios  Using MARS CITY equipment records, multiple O&M scenarios are being created  Test scenario ready now  Advanced scenarios will be created this spring  FMs will be generating and validating the scenarios  Any smart structure can be simulated
