WATERLOO HIGH SCHOOL

COSMIC RAY OBSERVATORY PROJECT  Goal of the statewide project  Install cosmic ray detectors at high schools around the state of Nebraska  Link the data-acquisition computers via the Internet  Develop the largest cosmic ray detection network anywhere (75,000 square miles)

WATERLOO C.R.O.P. SITE  Equipment Inventory  Particle Detector –To register the impact and energy of cosmic rays  Global Positioning System –To record the exact time and place of the strikes  Personal Computer –To keep track of the data and link it to other CROP sites

LOCATION OF PARTICLE DETECTOR  Rooftop of Waterloo High School  Four detection units set up in weather- proof enclosures

PREPARING WIRING HARNESS  Untangling and grouping wires for the particle detectors

CONNECTING ELECTRONICS  Rooftop detectors are connected to data acquisition cards (DAQ) located inside the building.

SETTING THRESHOLDS  To calibrate the particle detectors, thresholds had to be verified and set

GPS AND COMPUTER SET UP  Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver is connected to the data acquisition card.  The data acquisition card is connected to the computer.

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES  At present, computer is not communicating with the data acquisition card.  Contact has been made with Technical Support for assistance in diagnosing and correcting this problem.
