Mathematics Center Skagit Valley College Whidbey Island Campus 1900 SE Pioneer Way Oak Harbor, WA

Location: Sprague Hall, Room 5 Whidbey Island Campus Phone: The Mathematics Center offers a variety of courses in an individualized-instruction format. Courses in Basic Mathematics, Algebra, and Professional Technical Applied Math are offered. Math 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, and 100. While the content is essentially the same as that of the traditional classroom sections, the material is presented in a math lab environment with the help of DVD’s, computer tutorials, and one-to-one contact with instructors and tutors.

Advantages of the Mathematics Center One of the advantages of the Math Center is flexibility in scheduling. Classes may be taken in the Math Center at times when lecture sessions are not available. Within certain guidelines, students determine their rate of progress and their test schedule. Those wishing to review a course may be able to finish in less time than the standard eleven- week quarter. Students who complete approximately 60% of their course before the end of the quarter may qualify for an incomplete and thereby extend their course into the next quarter without re- registering or paying additional fees.

Attendance in the Math Center It is important for students registering in the Math Center to be self-motivated and willing to assume the responsibility for their attendance and progress. Students who cannot attend regularly can still set a schedule enabling them to be successful. Hours of operation may vary from quarter to quarter. It is expected that students will be in the Math Center during the hours for which they are registered and should expect to spend an additional 3-5 hours per week in the center testing.

Completing Courses Students frequently ask how much time they need to spend in the Math Center to complete a course. Because of differences in ability, preparation, learning styles and goals, this question is impossible to answer. The time required to complete a course may very tremendously from student to student. A rough guide for a student who has recently completed the prerequisite course successfully might be able to study 8-10 hours a week in the center and another 5-8 hours at home.

Hours of Operation  Fall, Winter, Spring Quarters Monday – Thursday: 8:30a.m. – 9:00 p.m. (Also open some Fridays throughout the quarter. Dates and hours will be posted)  Summer Quarter Monday – Thursday: 8:30a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 4:00p.m. – 8:00p.m. For more information, please contact an instructor in the Math Center.
