105MC Workshop 3

Morning Workshop Feedback and peer-review of last week’s task As a group select a piece of music (no lyrics) Come up with a detailed proposal for an accompanying narrative music video i.e. the story for your music video-storyboarding is optional The narrative of you music video must include the following: – Propp’s 8 character archetypes. – Propp’s 31 narrative functions. The central theme of your music video will be an exploration of a binary opposition. IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION: How will the selected music guide you in your narrative choices, in terms of mood, feeling and tone?

Mini-Tasks over Lunch Task 1: Select three texts belonging to three different genres. The texts can be anything: film, book, digital, newspaper, radio etc. Come prepared to explain your choice. What genres have you chosen? How did you identify/recognise each genre? Why did you pick them, what is it that interests you? Is there a genre you really don't like? Why? Can you think of a text defying or flouting genre? Task 2: Quickly research the US TV series Supernatural. Come prepared to share your findings with the rest of the class.

105MC Afternoon Workshop 3 - Genre

Task 1: Discuss your Texts Select three texts belonging to three different genres.

Task 2: Supernatural at the Movies Supernatural’s original trailer "Supernatural at the Movies" by Ash (and its sequel ) What is the songvid trying to do with the source text? Which genres can you recognise? What devices and techniques is the songvid using? How does genre influence and shape each of the narratives in the songvid? How do you go about in decoding the various references? What visual, aural and other elements contribute to your reading? Find out who in your group knows/likes Supernatural. How much of a difference does your familiarity make in your viewing? How does your taste and enjoyment for the various genres portrayed makes a difference? How well do you think the songvid works, and why?

For next week: Working as a group, select a well-known text of a specific genre. Create a storyboard which turns the text into a different genre, and post it on the blog. Some possible examples: – Hamlet as a musical comedy – Pride and Prejudice as a horror movie – Psycho as a romantic comedy Also on the blog, analyse and comment on your work. What were you trying to do, and why? How did you go about doing it? What have you learnt about genre from this exercise? Do you think differently about genre now, and in which ways? What are the links between genre and narrative?
