CER on the STAAR! Directions: Review these notes about short answer questions, and complete the corresponding worksheet.

Structure of Short Answer Question Single Selection: Claim (direct response to the prompt) Evidence (embedded quote(s) from text that support your claim) Reasoning (What is the significance of your evidence? How does your evidence support your claim?)

Structure of Short Answer Question Crossover Selection: Claim (direct response to the prompt) Evidence 1 (embedded quote(s) from text that support your claim) Evidence 2 (embedded quote(s) from text that support your claim) Reasoning (What is the significance of your evidence? How does your evidence support your claim?)

Now review the rubrics for STAAR Short Answer Questions (CERs) These are the rubrics for the crossover selections; however, the single selection rubrics are almost identical. The only difference is you just do not need to include evidence from multiple passages.

Short Answer ? Scoring Guide

evidence from both selections. Look at some example short answer questions (CERs) and use the rubrics to score 0, 1, 2, or 3. Justify your answer. Prompt: What is one similarity between the boy in “Jim at Bat” and Billy Crystal in “A Crystal-Clear Love Affair”? Explain your answer and support it with evidence from both selections.
