Licences There are approximately 5,800 taxis on the road, Under 600 are the new annual as-of-right licences Competitive responses are beginning to appear eg; the introduction of silver taxi fleets.

Perpetual Licences Metro licence prices have remained stable for approximately 18 months. The number of licence transfers also indicates there continues to be demand.

Driver Numbers

Pass rates and average scores are improving, as drivers dedicate more time to studying and understanding their responsibilities. 234 people have the Knowledge 507 applicants have passed one or more modules Geographic – 701 Driver Behaviour – 592 General Assessment – 89 (new entrants only) Many drivers very close to attaining the Knowledge. Questions in the Knowledge with a high fail rate are consistent with the type of complaints received by the TSC. These include: 1.Basic communication skills 2.Use of Mobile Phones 3.Fatigue management 4.Responsibilities after an accident 5.Road rules Applicants need to know their responsibilities as a taxi or hire car driver in order to pass the Knowledge.
