Welcome back! To start us off produce a title page for SOUND! For keywords use go science book 2
What do we know about sound? Around the room there are information sheets to help you
‘Ear’ ear To start off our new topic : Answer TRUE or FALSE Challenge: Answer why? 1)If your eardrum breaks you will be deaf forever 2)People use their ears in the same way bats do 3)Antibiotics can treat some hearing problems 4)The ear bones are in the middle of the ear
Objectives: Name the parts and positions of the ear (L4) Describe how sound is detected by the ear (L5) Explain some different types of hearing loss (L6) ‘Ear’ ear
A’s, you will need a piece of a4 scrap paper, a pencil and something to rest on. You need to turn and face the back of the room next to the person you are partnered with. B’s, you will describe the diagram we are about to look at. You can talk to each other as much as you like about what to draw BUT A’s must not look at the drawing! After 4 minutes, swap roles to draw the other half of the diagram. Paired Draw – Shoulder Partners
The Ear – Partner A
A’s back to the board Take the picture B’s ready to describe Ready to swap...
The Ear – Partner B now
Put your drawings on your table. Have one trip around the room. Look at others. How does yours compare? Who’s is the best? How would you improve yours? Compare others now...
How do we hear?
Face partners, A & B A to explain to B The structure of the ear 30 seconds thinking time 1 minute talking time B to explain to A How we hear sounds 30 seconds thinking time 1 minute talking time Tell a friend...
1. Sound waves are collected by the ear lobe or pinna. 2. The waves travel along the ear canal. 3. The waves make the ear drum vibrate. 4. The small bones [ossicles] amplify the vibrations. 5. The cochlea turns the vibrations into electrical signals. 6. The auditory nerve takes the signals to the brain. The Ear
Storyboard Produce a storyboard of how we hear Include diagrams AND descriptions
Ear gets blocked by wax Accidents or loud bangs can damage the eardrum Middle ear can get infected Older peoples bones may fuse Nerve cells in the cochlea degrade with time Loud noise may damage the cochlea This can be treated with antibiotics This might repair itself This prevents vibration There is no cure for this Signals are not sent to the brain A doctor can wash this out How might our ears become damaged?
Understanding Checkpoint: 1)If your eardrum breaks you will be deaf forever 2)People use their ears in the same way bats do 3)Antibiotics can treat some hearing problems 4)The ear bones are in the middle of the ear
Are 2 ears better than 1 for determining the direction of a sound? Could you devise an experiment to test this?
When a sound wave hits an object it can _______ The wave bounces off the object and causes an ____ Reflect, Echo
Sound waves that do not get reflected by a material and do not pass through it are said to be ________ by the material These materials are known as ‘_____ _________’ Absorbed, sound insulators
Unwanted sound is called ‘noise’ Very loud or unpleasant sounds are called ‘noisy’ We use a sound intensity meter to measure how loud a sound is The loudness is measured in decibels (db)
Threshold of Hearing The ‘threshold of hearing’ is the quietest sound we can hear We call this 0db A road drill is c. 90db
Pain! Sound becomes painful at about 134db (the level at which Miss Graham shouts?) The eardrum breaks at 185db
The Decibel Scale……Put them from quietest to loudest Jet engine at about 100m Watch ticking Quiet office Rustling or falling leaves Birds flying by Normal conversation Vacuum cleaner Quiet conversation Busy street traffic Pneumatic drill
Was this what you expected? Where do you think a vuvuzela would come?
A vuvuzela measures about 130db! h?v=_DKoXIyLWds&feature=rel ated
Should the vuvuzela be banned? Write an argument for or against! You MUST include scientific theory (what will it do to the ear?)
NOISIEST AND QUIETEST PLACES Noisiest 1 Newcastle decibels 2 Birmingham decibels 3 London decibels 4 Darlington decibels = Doncaster decibels Quietest 1 Torquay decibels 2 Paignton decibels 3 Scunthorpe decibels 4 Folkestone decibels 5 Colchester decibels
