PATTERNING AND ALGEBRA EQAO PREPARATION DAY 4

TYPES OF PATTERNS We talked about two different types of patterns 1.Number patterns 2.2. Geometric patterns

NUMBER PATTERNS Can be increasing or decreasing Pattern rules: TWO KEY THINGS Start at What you do each time

GEOMETRIC PATTERNS Use shapes (polygons) Often express in terms of number of shapes (#of triangles, # of small squares) Use the same pattern rules (two key things)

WAYS TO EXPRESS PATTERNS There are many ways to express the same pattern In a line with commas Chart Graphically Input-output machine In pictures

INPUT-OUTPUT MACHINES You put in an input, it spits out a NEW output each time They will often ask you for the pattern rule for the outputs

CHARTS AND GRAPHS

EXTENDING A PATTERN Don’t just keep going!! Look for a trick or a fast way to do it!

ALGEBRA!

ALGEBRA Algebra is used to find UNKNOWN things! Constants always stay the same Variables change

ONE-VARIABLE PROBLEMS
