Mission Renovation A plan to bring the George H. W. Bush Library into the 21 st century

Overview This is my proposal for bringing the George H.W. Bush Museum into the 21 st century. There are several technologies already in use by many major museums and some that are completely new and even some that are in the not-so-distant future.

Audio Tours Many museums are already using Podcast tours and have been for some time. In a Podcast, the user is required to download the media and put it on their MP3 player BEFORE they visit the library.

Why this won’t always work... This delegates most of the labor to the user and they might not want to do the work even though it is easy and simple. This means they will rely on the museum’s hardware which means that the museum must have hardware.

Kiosks Some of the current museum kiosks are slightly outdated and difficult to use. Some of the displays are also ho-hum, such as the Berlin Wall Q&A and the Election of ’88. The displays could be easier to use and more animated.

The Idea Create a wireless network all over the Bush Library so that any PDA, Nintendo DS, or PSP can access the network and get the museum walkthrough in their respective formats. Add some new kiosks to the museum floor and equip them all with the same elo© touch screen monitors.

The Implementation Wireless routers can be strategically placed in the new area to cover the entire museum floor. Wireless routers can be strategically placed in the new area to cover the entire museum floor. Software can be made and set up so that when any wireless device that is supported comes into contact with the network, the owner will be asked if they would like to use the software and then they can go on a self guided tour of the museum. Kiosks Revisited The one thing to remember when designing kiosks is to make them sophisticated enough to entertain the adults and easy enough for the children to understand and use.
