How Networks Support HCI  WHAT IS NETWORK?  BRIEF HISTORY OF NETWORKS  WHY WE NEED NETWORKING  WHO REQUIRES NETWORKS

Types of Networking  Local Area Network  A local area network (LAN) is a network that is confined to a relatively small area. Such as school or building.  Wide Area Network  A wide area networks (WANs) connect larger geographical areas, such as London, Africa, or the world.

Network Topology  What is a Topology?  The physical topology of a network refers to the configuration of cables, computers, and other peripherals.  The logical topology is the method used to pass information between workstations.

Network operating system  What is a network operating system?  Unlike operating systems, such as DOS and WINDOWS that are designed for single users to control one computer, the network operating systems ( NOS) coordinate the activities of multiple computers across a network.  It acts as a director to keep the network running smoothly.

Types of NOS Client/server Client/server network operating systems allow the network to centralize functions and applications in one or more dedicated file servers.  Peer –to-Peer Peer-to-peer network operating systems allow users to share resources and files located on their computers and to access shared resources found on other computers.

Network security  Firewall  A firewall is special software or hardware designed to protect a private computer network from unauthorised access.  User name and password You usually have to enter a user name and password when you want to access information on a network.
