Volcano Mount Saint Helens By Dana Listfield

Mount St. Helens Location: Washington State, USA

May 18, 1980 Mount Saint Helens erupted the deadliest most economically destructive volcanic event in the U.S. history Killed 57 people 250 homes, 47 bridges, were destroyed 15 miles of railways were ruined 185 miles of highway were damaged May 18, 1980

New landscape After Mount St. Helens erupted there was a debris avalanche The mountain changes elevation from 9,677 feet to 8,365 feet Leaving a 1 mile across crater The top is now shaped like a horseshoe

How did it affect people? 57 people were killed An 83 year old man who lived by the mountain for 54 years died because he didn’t evacuate because he didn’t think the eruption was going to be that bad A volcanologist was stationed by coldwater Ridge and his position was hit by hot ash clouds 250 homes were destroyed

Aftermath of the first Day 57 people were dead 200 homes were destroyed plus land used for transportation The agricultural land was destroyed too The top of the mountain looks like a desolated moon shape 4 billion feet of timber was destroyed 12 million animals died

After the Disaster Fireweed was the first plant to start to grow Then plants started to grow Animals slowly reappeared back to the area Mount St. Helens has been emitting steam and building crater structures since its 1980 eruption, and could have another large eruption in the future Scientists have been trying to accurately measure the magma pool beneath the mountain and the surrounding area of the Cascades In September and October of 2004 vented magma began forming a lava dome replacing part of the mountaintop from May 18, 1980 eruption This continued for nearly 4 years until July, 2008

You are to also summarize your topic and include any important data or information such as, location, date, death toll, magnitude, etc… You should also think about the story behind the event. How did this event affect the landscape? How did it affect people? What was the aftermath like? What was done to prevent or help before or after the disaster?
