Talk Moves Learning Goal: To understand key talk moves and how they can help you in your learning.

By the end of the day, we will… Share, expand and clarify our own thinking Listen carefully to one another Deepen our reasoning Think with others

Teacher-Centered Discussion

Student-Centered Discussion

What makes a good conversation? What is it in a discussion that makes you stop listening? And what makes you stop talking? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhiCFdWeQfA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg8PIK74KO4 Turn and talk to your neighbour about the positive and negative examples of communication in both video clips.

Case Study https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO-a-Yz4xA8 Part 1:What message was the woman trying to give? Why did he miss it? Part 2: How does he improve his listening? What techniques does he use?

What are the talk moves? 1. Revoice 2. Restate someone else’s reasoning. (“Can you repeat what he/she just said in your own words?) 3. Apply your own reasoning to someone else’s reasoning. (“Do you agree or disagree and why?)

Continued 4. Prompt for further participation. (“Would someone like to add on?) 5. Wait time. (“Take your time…we’ll wait…this is important…”)

Let’s try it… In pairs, choose a talk station, read the task and practice the talk move together. After you have been to all of the stations, return to your favorite talk move and record yourselves practicing the move. Share talk moves as a class.

As a class Is Regi a welcoming school? Turn and talk. Class discussion: *Don’t forget supporting details to support your opinion!

Success Criteria How do we know when a discussion has gone well? Let’s make our success criteria:

Exit Card Explain one thing you learned from a classmate during the class discussion. Did this class discussion feel different than regular classroom discussions? Which strategies do you think that you have to work on? Why? Which relationships in your life could use some talk moves? Why?
