Physical Geography

Location Haiti is located in the Caribbean and takes up the western one third of the island Hispaniola. It shares the island with the Dominican Republic. Capital: Port au Prince map.jpg

Climate and Terrain  Haiti’s climate is tropical, but is semiarid where mountains cut off trade winds.  The terrain is mostly rough and very mountainous. all-haiti-94-3_map.gif

Human Geography

Literacy  In 1997 the government passed a 10-year education plan with the goal of universal access to quality schools. The national budget increased the education budget to pay for programs for school lunches, uniforms, and bus transportation.  In 2002, 30,000 literacy monitors distributed 700,000 literacy manuals  School attendance has risen 44% (from 20 % in 1994 to 64 percent in 2000).
