What Changes Come With Parenthood? Parenthood begins with having a child by birth or adoption. Changes that occur are a change in lifestyle New Responsibilities Emotional Adjustments Changes in Relationships Changes at Work SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Rewards of Parenthood Many joys are brought by parenthood There is nothing quite like a baby’s first smile or hearing a three year old say “I love you”. Parents are able to see the world differently through their child’s eyes as they discover it. Raising children can give parents a great sense of accomplishment. SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Making Decisions About Parenthood You must have a clear picture of what parenthood is before you decide to become a parent. You need to realistically ask yourself if you are ready for parenthood. You must have emotional maturity to be able to handle the changes that parenthood brings. SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Emotional Maturity in Parenthood You must be able to say that you are emotionally secure enough to be able to devote your entire attention to an infant without receiving any attention in return. If you have any doubts, it may be best to postpone parenthood. SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Unsound Reasons for Parenthood Our marriage is in trouble. Having a baby will not solve your problems. A baby is someone who will love me and belong to me. I feel like I’m nobody. Being a parent will make me somebody. I want someone who will take care of me when I’m old. Our parents want grandchildren SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Sound Reasons to Become a Parent Having children will add depth to our relationship, which is already strong. I want to give a baby my care and love. I feel good about myself and believe that parenthood will be a rewarding experience. I want to experience the special bond between parent and child, which lasts a lifetime. I love children, and I want to be a parent. SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Management Skills for Parenting Whatever the decision, parents will need good money management skills, as well as managing other resources. Set goals Identify resources Make a plan Put the plan in action Reevaluate from time to time SWBAT examine possible demands of parenting and become informed on how a person could make a smooth transition into parenting.

Please answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper in complete sentences. Which of the changes caused by parenting do you think is the biggest? Explain How can parents-to-be prepare for the changes brought on by parenthood? Why are the negative emotions of parenthood hard to accept? What impact can having a child have on a working parent? Use your own words to define emotional maturity. Why is “Our parents want grandchildren” an unsound reason for having a baby? List the five steps of being a good manager.
